I never watch TV in my bedroom and won't allow TV in any bedrooms (since made superfluous by the amount of TV that the kids can watch online on smartphones anyway).

However if I was wiring a house I was planning to sell I would wire a CAT5 socket in every room back to a comms cabinet and TV in the master bedroom.
  • I'm putting in satellite, aerial, telephone and ethernet ports in each room as I renovate.

I have no qualms about having a TV in the bedroom. The presence of one does not require it to be switched on it it's not wanted.

  • In my new house there is a TV aerial in every room except the kitchen (which is the only other room I would actually want a TV in!)
I think the cables all look really ugly and I would prefer it if they weren't there!

An aerial in every room! My word that must look ugly.

I don't think 6-8MBps is very fast. What about upload speed?

I don't think it's very fast either! Just mentioning that you don't need Gigabit Ethernet to watch streaming TV.

I haven't tried the homeplugs. Are they the devices that use your electrical wiring system to increase your wifi range / strength?

They don't interact directly with wifi - they provide Ethernet connections using the mains as a signal carrier. So you would plug one end into your router, and at the other end you could plug in a computer directly or connect a 2nd wifi access point.

If you're going to the hassle, mess and expense of rewiring, run tv, cable/satelite, and ethernet cables to anywhere anyone might need them. You don't have to connect either end but it will stop your your house ending up with cables all over the floor and walls like ours. Don't skimp on the sockets either although location is probably more important than total number.
You could also leave ropes in to pull additional cables,
  • If the house is a semi or a terrace, having a TV in the bedroom and using it late at night is a really good way to wind up neighbours who are trying to sleep!

As a retired conveyancing solicitor I believe the information given in the post to be useful assuming any properties concerned are in England/Wales but I accept no liability for it.
  • I would put one in - the amount of work will be trivial if you are renovating the house. Adding one later would be messy.
  • If the house is a semi or a terrace, having a TV in the bedroom and using it late at night is a really good way to wind up neighbours who are trying to sleep!

But it does help mask the noise of shagging - yours or theirs.

    I disagree!

I love watching something in the dark, snuggled in bed, on a screen immediately in front of me with the headphones on. You feel much more involved. No distractions.

I even have fairy lights wrapped round my exercise equipment so I can use them in atmospheric near dark with iPads and headphones!

Well, each to their own... I just wanted to point out that at very little cost you can watch streaming internet video on your TV if that's what you want.
