Which BMW should I buy for a 4-people family?

Thanks a lot for your kind replies.
I've looked around and it seems there are no 1.8 BMW, only 2.0.
I think we only do up to 10,000 miles per year. So does it mean diesel is not good?
You'll likely be better off with a petrol. Nice to drive too.I've just come back from a dealer and yes, the 1 series is a bit small for us. The 3 series seems to be more suitable. I have not looked at the 5 series.
The 5 series is a little bit bigger and often cheaper than the equivalent 3 series (because the running costs are a bit higher), if you need the space I'd definitely look at the 5 series.0 -
Here we have another OP who just wants the BMW because its a "BMW". And OP there is no BMW released in the past 5 years that makes a 1.8 litre. And 116d SE for a family of four? Honestly? You would sacrifice your families comfort for the most basic entry level BMW simply because your wife wants a BMW for its name?
OP get real and get something you can afford0 -
I'm about to give up a company car BMW 3 series saloon. I'll be £2,000 a year better off with a Vauxhall Insigna which has more toys, more room and better fuel economy. Not as good a car in other ways but it will allow me to retire a year earlier.
The Beamer is a lovely drive, but the boot space is disappointing and space is limited in the back. The standard issue radio is poor on sound quality and there's no Bluetooth or USB connector for other modern toys that a family may have.
There's more to life than just keeping up with the Jones's. Don't buy a particular brand of car because your wife wants to be a snob. Buy because it's right for your family, right for your budget and right for you.
BMW make nice cars with a nice badge. But don't let her get hung up on restricting choice.0 -

Our family includes two adults and two children. We would like to buy a used BMW, up to 5 years old, 1.8 engine, automatic.
Could you pls advise which BMW is suitable for a family?
My sincere thanks
A Merc C220 AUTO

In case you didn't know (and it's something important to you), split folding rear seats are an optional extra on many BMWs.
Seriously.
Same on Merc because I found out the hard way
I could not be beleive it when I tries to fit a large load in the boot the seats are fixed
I just hope I can manage
Only consolation is that at least the cab will stay clean because if it don't fit in the boot I ain't taking it - and that includes the mother in law When will the "Edit" and "Quote" button get fixed on the mobile web interface?0 -

Only because they can 'afford' an old poverty spec bmw and will most likely be posting on the debt free wannabe forum as a result.0 -
A 320d puts people in poverty?
Have you alerted the third world?0 -

+1 point. The only thing worse the OP could do is getting out a loan for a entry level poverty spec BMW to please the wife.0 -

Much better just to tell her he's bought one and then don't.0
