Found out via Facebook!

Options
Hi there

I found out this afternoon that I have been made redundant. The whole of the head office where I work has been served notice and the 90 days consultation period starts on the 2nd of October.

My concern is that the meeting was held at 2pm, I found out at 5pm via Facebook when a former employer posted the news that was released by the local paper.

I then received a text message saying that as I had missed the meeting (due to being away from the office due to sickness) I was to call a number at 7pm, however the number would not let me connect so therefore I have had no formal update in regards to this announcement.

I have since found out that other people may have been called into the office on days off etc to be updated and I didn't even receive a phone call.

Do I have grounds to take this further as feel this is very unfair to have found out via social media.

    Not really
If you were too sick to attend work- to work , surely you were too sick to attend work to attend a meeting. That would be the logic in not calling you in.

It is entirely possible that a letter was sent to you but it couldn't be written/sent until the official announcement today anyway.

What do you think/want to achieve by "taking it further"?

Its a horrible way to find out that you have been made redundant or are at risk (which is it? If there is a consultation period doesn't that suggest that not everyone is going?)

It's entirely reasonable that you contact them and ask for fuller information. It sounds as though you were not called in (perhaps because it wasn't realised in time that you were off sick - are you off long term, or short term?) To me, the text saying you missed the meeting sounds as though you were expected to have been there so it was only when they realised that you weren;t that they knew they needed to get the information to you, which they then did by text, and giving you a number to call.

It is very unfortunate that you say the news elsewhere first but if a newspaper published it that is not something the employer would have much control over.

Do let them know that you could not get through on the number provided. It may be that that was a temporary glitch (or even a problem with your phone) but if not, then they need to know as they may be sending that number to other people as well.

    Good luck

Your manager needs a real kick up the a..s. Disgusting way to treat an employee. Out of courtesy they could have called you.
  • Oh, wow. That's a horrible way to find out. They certainly should have called you if you were not in work. But you have to concentrate on getting better and finding another job.
    Wishing you all the best.

So which company is this that is planning on sacking all it's head office staff by the end of the year?

Presumably if head office is closing, then the rest of the business is too. Can't say I recall such a company planning to close.
(There is/was Phones4U, but alot of the head office staff there have already gone, no notice at all ... and those remaining I don't think have been given notice yet.)

Anyway, unless you thought the meeting was going to last 5 hours, why did you have to wait 5 hours to call a number that didn't work?
Surely you could have called the boss, HR, a colleague, etc when the meeting was planned to be over to ask what it was about, especially as you knew it was important.

I think if this was a place I worked, and I knew a colleague had missed such an announcement, I would call them myself as soon as the metting was over.

Depending upon the setup the line manager may have just found out that they will probably be out of a job just before Christmas.

Does it really matter how you found out?

Presumably the company was in trouble and you had some prior knowledge?

I'd hazard a guess at TUI which operates as Thomson and First Choice, all the details given by the OP match up with this.
