Well had a good day, spent just a fiver, couple of heathers, cake and some fish. As I forgot to defrost the meat for my casserole.

He also has a pirate coat, lots of Japanese costumes, those cat ears that work off your brainwaves. His favourite cane was made especially for him, a candy cane walking stick with a replica sword stick inside but he broke it - think it had been made from the sort of bandages you use for plaster casts. I have been trying to work out when and why I bought some black felt material that turned up the other day (sorting through boxes) and I think I was going to try to make him a top hat but then he had this one made to measure (couple of English/ Drama teachers who run a part-time theatrical costumes stall in Affleck's. I know I bought the dark red to make him a fez (Doctor Who).
I have been resting - read my book, had a sleep, watched Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock and Doctor Who and played a puzzle game. Tomorrow will be a better day.My mission in life is not only to survive, but to thrive and to do so with some Passion, some Compassion, some Humour and some Style.NST SEP No 1 No Debt No mortgage0 -
I shall be riding a tandem bike for this leg, with a tag-along bike attached behind, and a bike buggy for 2 more behind that. I think mothernerd will have first choice of seat, but the rest are up for grabs!

For those people discussing where they went wrong when friends have bought huge houses etc. It isn't all it is cracked up to be. I have discovered that the people who seem to have it all, are usually one pay packet away from disaster. Growing up, my best friend had everything she wanted for Xmas and birthdays. They had 5 kids, and the spend on Christmas between them was thousands. We got to 17 and her mum declared bankruptcy, lost the house to foreclosure and they moved into rented accommodation. Still the same even now. They have nothing. Another friend was gifted £250,000 towards a house. Got one for £315k which isn't even that nice to be honest. Promptly started borrowing from this offset mortgage, paying for a £50k wedding, bits and pieces. SO now they have a huge mortgage, finance on two cars, 2 kids with a £100+ spend on clothes a month, huge credit card debts and if the husband is off sick for more than a few days they would lose it all. Looking from the outside I would say they had the perfect life. I try not to judge on what people have any more. Or be jealous. You never know what is going on behind closed doors.
Totally agree on this one Lilt. I have friends who spend a fortune on stuff, have the latest big TV, phones, new cars etc but they are stressed and always complain of being skint.
I have been on MSE since 2006 and my attitude to money has been shaped by my own experience of being in debt (which I worked very hard to pay off) and being on here. I am now much happier and know that its the simple things in life that make me happy - spending time outdoors for example, curling up with a good library book, spending time with the people I love.
Being on the Oldstyle thread has been really valuable and I sill go on the debt free boards 'cause that's where it keeps me real, reminds me of where I came from and there are lots of great challenges like this one which keep me from ever getting in debt again.
On example of my thinking now was demonstrated a few nights ago - A few nights ago I had a call from my current phone provider. They were looking to sell me another phone. My contract with them is for £6.90 per month and I use an old Nokia E63 which I love. The man on the phone was utterly shocked that I didn't want a new phone. He commented on how old my phone was and wouldn't want to upgrade? To me this is a no brainer. Why would I throw away a perfectly good working phone just to have a new one. I said to him I would buy a new phone when my current one is no longer working. The surprise in his voice was priceless.
Apple muncher, thank you for the new Bike challenge. I loved the swim challenge and it encouraged me to actually get out and have a swim a couple of times last week. I did overdo it a bit though as I had the bad cold so a week to relax and chill and dream and plan sounds ideal.
I have the day to myself today (mostly) so I am going to have a lovely relaxing day to myself.0 -
NSD yesterday and today - my grandmother found bagels in M&S when she went into town and refused money for them! So a spend free weekend - off to hers for sunday dinner later and to do a few odd jobs that she needs, so need to fit some studying in later. Probably a mad week at work this week, so taking it easy today. Did fit in a walk round the park yesterday and will try to do the same again today on my way back from dinner.

Morning turtles cold one here, dived back into my bed with a brew. Dog walking can wait.
Allie23 well done you. Nice to hear peoples stories on here to help get me motivated.
This week going to face the music and work out my debt free day without a lodger. Been burying my head in the sand a bit lately. Know I really don't want a lodger, as have my 3yr grandson here a fair bit, unless I find a student doing work placement at local zoo they have worked out brilliantly.
SOA bagels and Sunday dinner you have it made.
Need to get off this bike seat, ouch can't believe people enjoy this sport could be interesting trying to walk dog after.

allie - I have the same attitude to replacing stuff, I do it when the other thing has worn out, it is partly because of not wanting to waste money but also because precious resources have been used to make an item so use it till it is done.
mothernerd - your son sounds dashing - why was he wearing that outfit?
Calling - I love the Titanic film, I also have a morbid fascination with the whole disaster.
Money was spent yesterday - on chips after our family bike ride. Also on Guinness for DH.
I also bought some mountain biking shoes and clip in pedals, they are used but only twice so I am guessing the previous owner didn't get on with them, I haven't ridden in them before so it will be fun when they arrive.
Last week I went to try on some riding/yard boots at our local equestrian store, they have ordered some in my size for me to try but they are very expensive, I really want them because for the first time in an absolute age I can fit in standard width boots with room for jeans and socks underneath and still have space. What do I do. I will wear them for dog walking, riding, normal wear for many years.
Hoping not to spend any money today, DS is playing football then we have the afternoon together, me and DH will go running before tea. Tea is a meatball pasta bake.Debt Free and now a saver, conscious consumer, low waste lifestyler

Had a great day in London yesterday, but went well over budget
Will need to make up for it this week. Also going up there again this eve as friend has tickets to see famous comedian live, but her sister can no longer go, so I agreed to. She doesn't want money for the ticket, but I will still need to pay for travel.
Just hoping for a good few SFD's during the week! Argh!Letting Go NST #17

Calling - the thought of being lycra-clad! Good for you, working out your DFD. A daunting but necessary task.
dolly - how about working out the price-per-wear of the boots? How many years do you expect them to last? Your post covered riding, biking and running! Wow!
soa - have a lovely time with grandma. She seems to be looking out for you.
allie - thank you for sharing. I too like to keep things until they are unmendable. Dh has sorted out our washing machine several times so far - it is about 8yrs old so far. And he's pretty good with the tech too. My laptop has had new batteries, a new left click button, but is slowly fading away. He has spent aaaaages researching a new one for me - keeps asking me questions about what I want and getting frustrated by my vague answers! But he finally clicked the 'buy' button last night - gulp! I feel guilty, as I do not NEED a new one. Maybe it's his way to pave the way for him getting something in the next few months...!!!
So I shall task him with SELLING all our old, unused (but obviously still much-loved by him) tech gubbins. Anyone for an Atari computer...?

Dropping in to confirm, yesterday was defo a SFD, today defo not. Did my shopping, also avoided the Lidl conundrum (with my own voucher!!) as I only needed chorizo by the time I had done the other 3 shops, so I didn't bother. Got some extra bits that weren't on the list but nothing that won't be used lickity split.
Have caved today and got my one and only take away of the month. MSE if you can call it that, as it is for one, so half the price, and got enough to cover tomorrow's lunch too :rotfl: £7.50 for 2 meals? Not bad...
Also Jellytot had a bed disaster this morning which meant the heating being on drying out mattress, and all heavily washed bedclothes etc. All needed to be dry before bedtime (6pm) tonight so had to do it on the radiators. She could have slept in with me and it would have dried overnight eventually, but she is such a wriggler, and she snores... :rotfl:

Off to eat my naughty take awayxx
This is one of the best posts I've ever read anywhere-it is SO true!
Morning everyoneWell I woke up in a really odd mood-a decluttering mood :T I've been smashing at suitcases to sling out, chucking old toys and alsorts ! I had to have a look in the mirror to make sure it's still actually ME
I haven't spent anything today and have done some exercise.
Out of interest, what are people doing for christmas? Are you having it at yours, going to friends/family? I'm doing it this year, but it will be a frugal but jolly affair. I won't be out of pocket and lumbered with the washing up lol. Even though we are not religious, I do like the family round and the atmosphere it brings. I need to sit down and work out a budget from now really. Love to hear what your all doing:A Your Always in my heart, you never ever will be forgotten-9/9/14:heart2:0
