Do you recommend using oil extractor/syphon rather than draining from sump plug?

I use a smaller handheld version (Sealey AK46) for changing transmission and diff oil.

I don't see any problem at all. The only negative is the mess they can make.

While it is true that modern suckers work quite well, do the test of using one then taking the sump plug off and leaving for a couple of hours. You will be surprised how much, especially on low fill sumps, still comes out.
Incidentally large marine applications use scavenger pumps, not remotely in the same league as car type suckers, but even they leave residue.
  • Looks like a Pela, isn't a Pela.

Buy the 10L column type version of the Pela,

Only worry I'd have with the Audi is that the VAG 20K extended drain interval is really too long for how fragile that 2.0TDI can be. I'd start doing 10K changes at that mileage if it were me.

    I can't seem to find a 10L version of the Pela. I could only find a 6L, 6.5L and 14L.

I think the 6L should suffice, unless the 14L has more suction action?

20k service intervals is quite high but the car was bought new and serviced annually by Audi dealers who apparently said the long life oil should be fine for 20k intervals. After 100k my brother used an independent garage and so far had 4 oil changes (one at ~120k, 140k, 156k, 170k). It still runs fine. He plans to run it till it completely dies.

There used to be a 10L, but clearly not any more. Up to you what you want to do with the Audi, but no matter how clever the oil technology, if you'd seen the state of some of the stuff that comes out of a 2.0TDI or even a 1.8T after 20K, you'd change it to QG0/2 fixed servicing regime pretty quick.

A quick look at the Pela website shows that the pumps are plastic - and a quick google suggests they struggle to handle hot oil.

I have indeed done that test, and the maximum additional drain I've seen is less than 150ml over a two hour drain on my Superb 1.9TDI PD 130. Mind you, I normally let the oil drain for at least 40 minutes before I start, and it's always still warm enough to flow easily when I begin extraction.

Also, on the motorhome engine (PSA DJ5T) prior to removing the sump as I mentioned above it'd been vacuumed clear of oil, and there was only an eggcup-full left in the sump when it was removed.

Bearing in mind that where you can vacuum out the additional from the oil cooler, as described above, you can get an extra 0.5L out over a sump-plug drain, I'll take the vacuum extractor every time.

Regarding marine, many large marine diesels do indeed use a dry-sump with scavenge pumps, but there are plenty of baffled wet-sump engines which don't like some of the smaller Volvo Pentas derived from the D5 automotive engine. Pela extractors were originally manufactured for the marine market, as an indication.

Respectfully, that's cobblers. I've handled boiling coolant with mine on several occasions, and it's been fine. Maybe not recommended, but then it's only sat in the extractor for a couple of minutes.

I've extracted many hundreds of litres of fluids of all sorts at all temperatures from room temperature to boiling as stated, and it's handled all of them without any fuss. Ultimately, oil doesn't need to be boiling to be extracted, and if it's too hot for a Pela, it'd be too hot to safely drain from the plug.

I have heard of plenty of not-Pelas going soft with hot contents, but genuine Pelas I've used have never shown any sign of that.

You mean the i-Drive? Yes I can check the level on there but in any case I can't use the oil extractor as there is no physical dipstick.
