Just get a quote elsewhere and tell them this figure.0
-
I would ask him if his quote was to replace both sides as it seems to be about twice what a colleague at work paid for a single side0
-
Do you mean the car is in for repair and your going to query it after the job? If so, tough luck, they will stick to their quote and you can go elsewhere in the future.
If you are still collecting quotes, any mechanic worth their salt, even a mobile mechanic working at the kerb, will do this for you in an hour or less, and for about half of you quote.0 -
Go elsewhere for a quote?
Could there be some other explanation for the high quote, other parts reqd?
Bearing not a serviceable item?...this is getting common with some rears where the bearing is sealed into the hub unit, parts alone circa £225 for a Yaris 1 rear hub unit part alone for example, not aware of Golf fronts going down this road but wouldn't put anything past any car maker these days.
Bearing not replaceable because the outer race has spun in the hub, or inner on the stub axle, either way destroying it?0 -
Do you live in or near London, OP? I do, and I always struggle to get anywhere near the prices people talk about on here, at indies or not. Labour rates are so high, I guess."Einstein never said most of the things attributed to him" - Mark Twain0

I'm based North West, so prices so be fairly low.
I'm still collecting quotes, but I said I'll hand my car in tomorrow.
If I was to cancel and still collect quotes, I need my car for my commute to work, approx 25 miles e/w on the motorway.
How bad is it to continue driving on a bad wheel bearing?
Thanks all!0 -

Depends;
how noisy is it at the mo?
How long has it been making the noise? The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....0 -
Mine's been rumbling for well over a year, must get round to doing it.0
-
Mine was rumbling for a week before I realised what it was (was the rear) - by time I realised and got it to a garage I was 80 miles from home and the car felt like it was loosing control.
Turned out the rear drum brake cable had binded (or something) leaving the shoes in park and a nip up the motorway generated enough heat to pull it to pieces. So depends if it's the fault or the sympton.
Just be careful - very careful.0 -
Hi guys,
Thanks for the comments and concern.
I just found out that the guy is charging £75 for labour. Which means I'm getting charged a fair whack (£160+) for the parts.
I believe this is JUST the front right wheel too.
Thoughts?0
