Pricing for 08 Golf, wheel bearing replacement

Hi,

I've been quoted £240 parts and labour for a wheel bearing on my front right wheel.

Just wondering if this is a bit pricey? Any advice welcome.

Thanks!

Very pricey. A new bearing is approx £70.

An hour or so labour. 2 hours tops.

  • Excuse my ignorance, I know it will vary - but what is an average hourly rate for a car mechanic?
  • My local Indy garage charges £40 + VAT per hour. I've no idea how that compares though!

There are two VW dealerships nearby to where I live (West Midlands); one charges £75 ph and the other £95. Both ex vat!

I would guess your estimation is from a VW dealership and on that basis, would recommend you search for a good local/independent garage whose hourly rate would be much lower.
  • Main dealer could be £100 an hour.
Would choose an indy over main dealer.
If like the Passat there's quite a bit to get leg off, but think some places can do it insitu with the right tools - never seen it only read it.
On the older passats, many have had issues with non genuine bearings, so would go for oem bearing.
I expect a 'normal' garage could do it for about £150.

OP has a Golf not a Passat. Do they use the same sub-frame and associated parts?

But yes to the indy comment. Never pay dealer prices unless you're concerned about maintaining manufacturer warranty; and even then ........ :)
  • I don't know, hence the use of 'if'.
    Both VW of course.
  • Its a hub, wheels off, calliper off and one bolt.
Someones having a laugh at £240, the part is about £40

I have had both rear bearings replaced in the last 6 months , one was £104+vat and the £110 +vat including the labour.

The part for the front is about £20 more expensive.

If I recall the explanation the part was quite pricy as it replaces part of the hub rather than it just being the bearing but the plus side is that the job is simpler as its screw off/screw on rather than having to drive out the old bearing. The Front looks like a similar arrangement.

This was for a 05 Golf at an independent shop
  • Thanks for the replies all.

You all seem to be saying I'm getting a quote off a main dealership - which I'm not.

I'm going with an indy Garage, are they taking the P here a little?

I really don't want to ring them up and try prove to them they are over charging. The conversation I had over the phone already was that it was just a wheel bearing change for the front right wheel.

Can anyone suggest a good way to approach this? It's a family run business that we have been using within our family for a good few years. I can't see why they would rip us off now?

    Thanks all.
