Bank account with no ID??

Hi All
My son is trying to open a basic bank account so that he can manage his monthly allowance (from me) and pay in money he is due to get for his upcoming birthday.
Unfortunately he does not have any of the forms of ID they are asking for. He has no interest in driving so no license, we do not travel so no passport, he is at college and does not receive any benefits.
They will not accept his college ID, he cannot get some form of notarised id from a doctor/teacher etc, they won't accept his birth certificate or his NI certificate and letter.
While I totally understand that they need to guard against fraud I cannot believe how hard they are making this.
Has anyone had this problem? Any ideas how to get round it?

Just searching on this topic sounds like you've got most things covered above :- The only other thing was a UK bank / building soc statement less than 3 months old.
Other than that the list I saw (Nationwide) said if you had problems with the above please contact the branch as there may be other ID that you can use.0 -
Also how old is he? - as above Natwest will accept birth certficates for under 20's (for Nationwide it is under 18)
Another option might be Barclays? They accept student ID for student accounts (not Student Union or NUS cards)

He may have no interest in driving now but he will in the future so why not just get one now, it's not like it's money wasted after all. Ditto with passport0

Has he never had even a savings account?0

He will need some proof of age at some point; bite the bullet and get a provisional driving licence or a passport now, before needing one is more of an issue.0

When he turns 18 and he wants to go out drinking with his friends, what's he going to do? Promise them he's 18? Yeah doesn't work.
Get him a provisional driving license to use as ID. Job done.Credit 'Score' - Don't buy the credit 'score' that Experian, Equifax and Noddle want to sell you. It's an arbitrary number that means nothing when it comes to applying for credit.

Like your son, I don't drive, have no passport and don't claim any benefits and so have had similar problems, most recently with Santander.
Although I could offer bank statements and utility bills as proof of address, the only 'proof of ID' I could eventually manage that they would accept was to phone up HMRC and ask them to send me a Tax coding notice I could use , which they did (after being on hold for about 15 -20 minutes to get through to them).

Unfortunately as he is only at college he is ineligible for a student account
Thanks for the nationwide and NatWest tip I'll try them (he's 17 atm)If you see someone without a smile.Give them yours :A

Student ID has his DoB on it or he can laminate a copy of his birth certificate. Although it is unlikely to be a problem as he does not and has no wish to drink :-)If you see someone without a smile.Give them yours :A
