I don't understand the problem here - I've never known my telephone banking information for my Barclays account, because I don't use it. When I call them, I call their customer services, make my enquiries, and they sort it out. If you now need a text service when making transactions abroad, tell them your number has changed but you don't know your telephone banking stuff because you never use it, and they'll ask you other security questions, to enable them to help you.
  • balletshoes, I am so shocked that they have not done this for me ! Why are they telling me it is impossible for me to update my mobile number without telephone baking stuff ?????
  • tell them that you do not take your mobile phone on holiday with you...............as you are afraid of roaming charges.

some people don't take them....my hubby.

The worse thing that will happen is they will block the card, you will phone them, they'll put you through to the fraud department who will verify that it is you using the card, then they'll unblock the card. The whole thing will take 10 mins.

Also, it's likely you'll pay the hotel on departure, not arrival so you could always use the card before your last day just to see if it does get blocked after just one transaction.

  • peachyprice - I just spoke to customer services at Barclays and they said I ought to relax and not worry so much, they said I am not likely to have any problems and if I do then to just contact them on their international number and it will be sorted (like you said).
Hotel said that they will expect me to pay on arrival , not departure. So we will see :O

    You should relax.

But you should also find cheaper ways of spending your money abroad next time you escape this fine nation.

If the OP has internet banking, they can just log in and update their mobile number - I did this a few weeks ago. And you do not need pinsentry to log in to online banking, there are 3 different options for that.
To further reassure the OP, I have used my debit card in several European countries plus USA, New Zealand and Australia. I have only had the text message to confirm a transaction once, that was in Oz 3 years ago for a fairly large car hire bill.
The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....
  • I know it's too late for the OP now as he/she is probably on holiday by now but in case this comes up for anybody else via a search...

If the pinsentry device is a card reader then they're not unique to your account, I have a card reader needed to add payees etc to my Natwest account and other people use my card reader with no issues. I also recall reading that you didn't even need to use your specific banks card reader - so the OP could have borrowed somebody elses card reader to make the changes needed.

There are a couple of different PinSentries out there. Certainly with some you can use different brands but this isnt universally true. I have Nationwide, Natwest and Barclays and I think its Nationwide and Natwest that is interchangable but the Barclays only works with its own.

Even if you dont know anyone else that banks with Barclays to borrow theirs the cashiers use a pin sentry to ID customers for counter services and normally have a couple in their draw (or none and they have to go searching for one) but I cant see the branch not lending you one just to do the update even if they wont allow you to keep it.
