Think I will have problems using card abroad - terrified isn't the word

I am terrified beyond all comprehension. I think I may well find myself in deep, troubled waters on my holiday tomorrow.

I don't need to notify Barclays of my going abroad and using my debit card, they will just send me a text when they see my card has been used (I am going to be using it to pay the hotel on arrival at the hotel which was booked via Booking.com's "pay later" thing) and they will ask me did I make that transaction to which I reply either "yes" or "no". Now...here is the situation:

I tried to update my mobile number with Barclays on the website but I need a so-called PINsentry device (I do not have one) so am not able to do it there so I instead made a phone-call to Barclays to notify them of my new mobile number, but because I have not been able to find my telephone baking passcode number, I am not able to change it. therefore I am stuck in a terrible dilemma: not able to change my mobile number until my new telephone banking passcode arrives (which will arrive while I am away).

They will send a text to my old number obviously when I try to pay on my debit card for the hotel room, but I won't obviously be able to reply (i have a new phone with new number) - then probs they will find the hotel transaction suspicious and decline it. THEN the hotel will kick me out leaving me with no accomodation on my holiday.

Someone help...what to do !??

Practical solutions are to take some cash, and/or another card. In all honesty I'd take both - forget about Barclays declining the card, what happens if it gets stolen?

You can try their customer service line, which is different to telephone banking. Someone should be able to offer advice, or they may well be able to record your new mobile number.
I'm with Barclays and have always found them pretty good at customer service
  • Cash the maximum your card will let you at the airport before you go.

Try the same as soon as you get there - if the card is blocked phone the number on the back of the card and plead!

Do you not have any other back up card?
Anybody else travelling with you who in the worst case scenario can pay the hotel for you and you pay them back?

Can you get a SIM card with the old number on it? and then use it in an unlocked phone?

Can you get cash from an AtM with the card in the resort to pay the hotel?
Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.
  • Backbiter, what do you think the odds are of me having the mentioned difficulties? I will have cash with me, the card will only be used once to pay for the hotel room and that's it.
  • Hi guys thanks for your responses, this all means so much to me. I am so grateful to you all.
Do hotels this day and age accept cash ?
  • Will Barclays definitely try to send me the text on the hotel transaction or is it just that they might?

i'm with barclays, they have never text me to confirm a transaction abroad. What makes you think they do this?
  • balletshoes, it's a new thing that the customer service guy told me about.
You no longer have to notify them of your going abroad anymore and that you will be using your debit card whilst you are abroad (like in the old days when you had to let them know before you traveled)...instead, they send you a text when you make a payment and they ask you to confirm (via text) whether it was you or not who made the transaction.
  • Could I phone customer service now and tell them again that I am traveling tomorrow and where I am travelling to, that I shall be using my debit card once to pay for hotel and BEG them to put that in my notes/records on my account???
