There is no checks done on the agents, they pay to be included in these search sites. You need to check the reviews on any you are interested in but be aware a large number do not have live pricing so the process seems to be
1) you see a price on a third party site that is cheaper than booking with the airline direct
2) you select book now and enter all your payment details
3) you then get a call from the agent saying that the fare that you booked at is no longer available and if you still want the flights it will be £xxx more
4) you either pay the difference (probably take you to the same fare that was on the airlines site to begin with) or say you do not want to proceed (do not mention the word cancel) and request a refund of your money
5) you wait a month+ for your money back (often less an admin fee of about £20)
6) if you do accept and pay the extra there are some agents that end up not paying for your tickets and either they or the airline cancels them but nobody tells you that you have no ticket and no money back. You then turn up at an airport to find they have no booking for you as it was cancelled

There are many stories that include a number of these scenarios
Always safer to book direct with the airline
