Our dog wears a leather collar, it stays on well and doesn't rub his fur away, he is a bulldog so head and neck are similar widths.

I had the problrm of narrow neck, bigger head with my dalmatian.

A fixed collar was fine for normal wear but as soon as we went for walk he stretched his neck making it much thinner and the collar would slip over his head.

I had to use a half check with him.

In his senior years he just wore the fixed leather collar as slipping over his head wasn't a problem then.

My retrievers, being a different temperament , wear collars that can slip over their heads - my choice- without any problems.

An APDT class I went to, started banning half-checks after a near fatality with a client's dogs . A puppy had its paw caught in the loop, on the older dog's collar, casing the collar to tighten. When the larger dog tried to pull free, he was throttled, but luckily, the owner wasn't far away.

I used them, just for walking, with my dogs, (who have never had indoor collars), but don't anymore, as they do spoil coats and only one dog pulls occasionally.

There was a very sad breed forum story couple of years ago, where a lady I knew pleaded with people not to leave dogs with any collars on, while unattended, because a much loved puppy she'd bred was left lose in a car, while her owner just nipped into a shop.

During this time, the puppy's collar got hooked on the door handle and she hanged.
  • My dog doesn't wear a collar at all. When I take him out, he wears a harness with his ID tag attached.

I'm not a big fan of collars personally. Never had them on any of my pets.

Mine wear lined leather collars for walks ( sight hound collar for one, widest collars I can find for others, rolled collars are beautiful and great if you guarantee no pressure will be on it) but nothing at home or unattended.

Like a stet above I knew a dog who was strangled by its collar when at home, strangled on a door knob.

Martingale is basically a fabric half-check, but both of them should be fitted so that the tightest setting is only as tight as it needs to be to stop it sliding over the head.
    .

That is exactly how Zara's one is adjusted. When she is not pulling/not straining - it just hangs on her chest quite low. But when I need to grab her or pull back - it just snugs around her neck not squashing it at all.

But she never has a collar when at home.

You can see here how low it hangs, how much space there is:

I have used a rolled leather collar for years, which I attach the lead to when out walking, its not left on in the house. Its lovely and soft around the dog's neck and have never had any problems of it marking the neck or breaking the hairs. They are expensive and not that easy to find nowadays. Don't know why a post above said they are only great if there is to be no pressure on them. I always walk my dog in it.
I also don't like leaving a dog unattended with a collar on because of them getting caught up somewhere. A friend's pup was left in a crate whilst they nipped out and when they got back they found it dead, that had strangled itself by getting hooked up on the door catch.

CD wears a rolled leather collar. He wears it all the time because he gets very anxious when it's removed.

    My post?

Because despite agreeing with every thing you say about softness of them, if pressure is applied its applied over a very small surface area, so its more force over smaller surface area. All my ( never used ATM) ring leads are rolled leather, and I agree its lovely stuff, soft feeling, and beautiful, and no hard edges. With my longnecked dogs I'd not want it as an every day collar, ( all though as well as a sight hound collar my sight hound has a normal collar).

Fwiw you can find rolled collars online and at big shows, not necessarily just dog, horsey ones too.:). And often at good saddleries and independent pets shops.

Good leather work is however harder and harder to find and pricier and pricier! But isn't everything!? My small dog's collar cost me what a decent pony bridle would have cost ten years ago. :( but. It will last him for life. I hope! And taken care of good quality leather gets softer and softer and softer.
