My son is also buying a car today and after seeing this thread I told him to call to tell A&L he will be needing to take £3K out of his account.

CS girl told him he didn't need to call in advance and just to go into the branch as usual, no notice needed and it wasn't a problem. Hope she got this right.

.... sorry to be the one to say this, but I called A&L last year the day before I wanted to withdraw £4k cash and was told the same as you - "not a problem, just go to the branch". However on getting to the branch, I was told "no chance" and behind the scenes talks had to go on to allow me to go and collect it from a post office. That's one of the 417 reasons I'm not with A&L any more.

Hopefully your experience will be different.

Enjoy your new car and thanks to all the people who replied to you with useful information for the rest of us. Thanks, I didn't know about the cash thing. My only experience with using my debit card 'unusually' ie I went twice to the supermarket to buy things and get £50 cashback each time to pay someone cutting some trees down, and my card was stopped for unusual activity!

Son got his cash out no problem thankfully. I now think it's probably best to err on the side of caution and always phone in advance, just in case.

Especially after hearing of your experience.
