Thanks Choccyface - I've been a credit union member for about five years, I asked in summer and they said I'd get a loan no problem. I think they said I could have about a grand but based on the repayments I'd rather 'just' have £600.

I've thought of a few other things.

I need to ask when I view it what state it'll be as far as decoration goes. I don't know what work they need to do, if it needs rewiring then I'll need to redecorate fully. It did look a bit grotty - I spoke to a neighbour and he said it was crack addicts who were in it last, and they're not the most house proud of people (but then, neither am I!)

Also, I'm about to swap my summer and winter clothes over, is it best to pack the winter ones in boxes or the usual blanket bag type things?

I'd put clothes into the bags and save the boxes for heavier or more fragile stuff.

As it's a flat, if it needs rewiring the council usually decorate afterwards as the sparks will have hacked lumps out of the plaster.

Not in Leeds. The flat I'm in now is being refurbished next year and they came round last week to discuss it. I asked if they were going to rewire and they said yes. We were talking about me being decanted during the work and that they'd do everything except redecorate which would be up to me.

I'd recommend some decent bin bags for putting all textiles into for moving, including bedding and clothes. That way, you can close the bag around the hoover pipe and get the air out before tying it. Saves lots of space.

Regarding curtains, I bought mine (around 4 years ago) in primark. They're fully lined and very pretty. £12/pair. Tie backs included, and they just slide onto the curtain pole so no fitting needed. The curtain poles came from Aldi at £6 ish, but I haven't seen them in there again.

Try looking on freecycle/local ad mag/similar for any furniture you might need. When I moved in here, I looked in the charity shops and they wanted rather a lot of money for what it was. One shop had the cheek to want £200 for a sofabed that had some unsavoury stains on it! Instead, I waited 5 months, saved up and bought a new sofa, one of those build your own types so it was guaranteed to fit. It was cheaper than anywhere else as well :) PM me if you want details ;)

Good luck with the move, I hope it goes well for you :)

For your list: What size curtains do you need (width/drop). You'll need something at the windows asap/the day you move in.

Drawing pins and old sheets until you decide what colour, size etc.

    Congratulations on your new home!

The council usually return their properties back to basic but clean and tidy when they get new tenants, so anything like rewiring etc., should be done and made good before you move in. That's probably why you saw wood and tool when you looked through the window, they're most likely working on it now.

I think that could be because you already live in it.

ps. it wasn't me who asked why you couldn't move yourself, it's a 'luxury' that's worth every penny IMO, but if you can pack yourself and just get them to move you it will be a lot cheaper, they'll even deliver the boxes to you and take them away afterwards once you've finished unpacking.

Wrap your breakables in the clothes you definitely won't need until next summer.

Remember to label your boxes on ALL sides so you can still tell what is in each of them however they are stacked.

Make sure you pack enough essentials for a few days in clearly marked boxes (if you drive then take those ones in your own car.)

    Things like:
Toilet paper (I speak from experience here :o )
    Tea/coffee/kettle/mugs/sugar etc
    Soap/toothpaste/toothbrush/towel etc
    Clean bedding
    Clothes for the next day/days
    You get the gist...

Remember to sort out your bed first (not necessarily building it, just putting clean sheets on the mattress on the floor will suffice) as you won't want to be sorting that when you are exhausted.

If you have the luxury of a spare room and are planning on decorating then store all your non-urgent boxes in that room so you can decorate the other rooms with minimal stuff to move out of the way.

Remember to have your post forwarded.

Print out lots of copies of a generic letter notifying organisations (insurance policies etc) of your change of address then just write the policy number at the top and post.

Make sure your phone is charged and pick up takeaway leaflets for on your first night :)

Good luck, it sounds very exciting :)

The toilet roll one sounds familiar!:o I would also add some packet foods, etc. that are quick and easy to make, at least for the first few days.
