I agree with others. Don't say anything until/unless you become pregnant. As others have mentioned, at your age conception will be more difficult and you need to be realistic about this; however I had three healthy sons in my 40's (44 and 46) all conceived naturally, despite my having only one ovary and surviving cervical and ovarian cancer. It may or may not happen for you, but being 40 does not automatically mean that it won't happen.

couldn't agree more ! 3 pregnancies post 40 (well one started at 39 but ended post 40). 1 was a breeze, 1 did end in a miscarriage and my fingers are crossed for the current one going as easily as the first. You might need to be a little more organized than the "youngsters" and perhaps try some ovulation monitoring if things don't happen quickly, but it's certainly far from impossible. Take the job and good luck
  • Which job would give you better maternity pay - if current one would do full pay and new one just SSP then I'd stay (but move alot closer to that job, maybe rent somewhere near and rent current place out)

chances of conceiving when knackered from commute (or even having energy to try!) are lower than if you were alot closer to the job.

My commute is just under an hour and I barely have the energy to cook dinner let alone baby dance :rotfl:

If you do this (wouldn't recommend it personally, but that's not the point) make sure you look at how long you have to return for, as well as how much they pay. It's ok saying X job pays more than Y, but if you have to return full-time for say 2 yrs or pay it all back it can look a lot less tempting.

I don't think you are legally obliged to tell your employer you are pregnant until about 15 weeks before your due date?

I couldn't imagine saying to a new employer 'by the way we're trying to have a baby', it's anothe rway of saying 'by the way we're having unprotected sex', I just couldn't imagine coming out with those words.... i'm not sure why you would.

I told my employer know right away when I found out that I was pregnant...but that was because one of my tasks at work involved moving heavy boxes of paperwork. i'd wait until you are pregnant before informing your employer, I think I'm right in saying that you've got to be employed for a minimum amount of time in order to qualify for the "full" amount of maternity allowance. Please don't quote me on that...its just what I remember when I was pregnant...I think I just snuck in under the wire!

    Take the job because
    1) you may not be able to become pregnant
