  • If the new job works for you take it, your family plans are none of their business right now.

Good luck with starting the family.

Take the new job. If it's a good place to work you will likely go back after the birth. It can take years to get pregnant if it works at all so you could be stuck with the commute indefinitely. You don't need to say anything to any employer until you are actually pregnant and even then not for a while unless your job is hazardous.
  • Why on earth would you tell an employer (current or prospective) that you are trying to get pregnant?? Unless you need time off work for fertility treatments or similar I really can't see any reason why you would bring it up.

I'd take the new job - your commute sounds terrible and whether you have a baby or not, you'll benefit from working closer to home. Hopefully a shorter commute will mean you're happier, healthier and more likely to get pregnant too. And you won't have to worry about finding a more suitable job when/if the baby arrives (which may be more difficult with a little one).

I really can't see any reason to stay in the existing job unless the maternity benefits are brilliant and they don't require you to pay the non-statutory benefits back if you don't come back after mat leave (which does happen sometimes, my employer provides some additional maternity benefits which you wouldn't have to pay back and an extra 'bonus' after you've return to work for six months rather than trying to chase women who leave down to recoup the money).
Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!
