Is there any way to collect train tickets.......

  • In the train scenario, if somebody else stole my credit card, how likely is it that they would know I had booked an online train ticket on a particular day to a particular destination?

They wouldn't, but they could easily use a stolen card to buy a train ticket, which they can then sell for cash.
A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.

I had a problem recently where I bought a train ticket online in advance using a credit card for £25. I received an email with a code but stupidly forgot to record it. When I arrived at the train station, my credit card was recognised, but as I didn't have the code,....
Was there no way to go online at all?

If the station where the tickets are to be collected has a ticket office, it should be possible to quote the booking reference to the clerk, who can retrieve the booking and print the tickets without reference to any credit or debit card.

Whilst this is true in theory, on 2 separate occasions Northern Rail ticket office staff have refused to assist me with tickets bought online where the TOD machine has failed.

Isn't the security over the top? Wouldn't it be sensible if EITHER you had the security code (if you haven't got the credit card with you) OR once you have the credit card you just confirm the from and to destinations?
With Lufthansa and Swiss Air, I have to give them my passport number. When I collect the ticket I just put my passport on the machine OR I give my full name. Then I am asked to confirm the destination.

Years ago I only had to put the code in if I had more than one set of tickets booked against my card. Otherwise it just printed out the tickets without asking for the reference.

    Those were simpler times...

I have picked up tickets my partner bought using her credit card using my debit card before.

I don't think the card matters.

Extract from a Greater Anglia confirmation e-mail:
Tickets will be available to pick-up from a self-service ticket machine at any one of 1000 UK stations 15 minute(s) after booking.
When you go to collect your tickets you will need:
    • Your collection reference: XXXXXXXX
    • Any debit or credit card in order to activate the machine. This card will not be charged.
You must have both of the above to be able to collect your tickets.

However, at the machine the display tells you to insert the card with which you made the booking, but it doesn't have to be!
