Why is it always newbies that have mysterious amounts of money accidentally paid into their accounts?

because something happens that they don't understand, and they come on here for the first time to ask about it?

You know this thing about lightning striking twice.....first they get unexpected money into their account, and then they stumble across the MSE forum....perhaps they should be putting their life savings into Saturday's lottery draw. May be they make history and lightning strikes thrice.
  • ......This is after they have spent the money of course as ''they were expecting a similar amount'' which never turns up then find themselves on here asking do they have to pay it back - believing they can keep it because it is a ''bank'' error.

probably played Monopoly with mum and dad as a child 'Bank error in your favour - collect £200'
    :D
The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....

Banks are allowed to take incorrect payments back without your agreement (particularly if you tell them to go to hell). Check the T&Cs, most if not all of them have recently added appropriate wording.

EDIT: Changes to Halifax T&Cs coming into effect on December 1 2014 include:

    http://www.halifax.co.uk/bankaccounts/pdf/current-account-guide.pdf

You can close your account if you don't agree with these changes but it will be hard / impossible to find an account that doesn't have this sort of clause.

First Direct have posted me a similar letter about these changes.

@colsten, it does happen -I've still got use of my "unexpected money" several years later ....but unfortunately, not £100,000:rotfl:
  • Spent over an hour on the phone with Halifax yesterday (managed to get a normal number to call, rather than an 0845----) and they still can't work it out - they got hold of some details, and think it originated in Bristol, but can't figure out more than that. The guy said I should be ok to keep the money (as I have made 'reasonable efforts' to find the origins) and also kindly compensated me for the phone call.

So am going to stop hunting - but don't think I quite dare spend it yet, might make sure to always keep £280 in that account for a year or two in case anyone does come looking for it!
  • I had this happen to me several years ago involving a few thousand pounds. It turned out the clerk filling out the list of monthly payments had inadvertently copied my bank details against the details of a new director, so I got my monthly salary plus his. The bank insisted it was mine, there was no mistake, but there was and I had to pay it back!

I had this happen to me when £52,000 was deposited into my bank account. However further investigation revealed it was taken from other peoples accounts by a fraudster and was using my account as a mule.
