Alternatively, withdraw the money, close the account, and flee to South America to start a new life of wine, women and song (warning - may not be viable with £280).

You'd get the wine and song;)
  • Why is it always newbies that have mysterious amounts of money accidentally paid into their accounts?

Funny you should say that - this has just happened to me... To the tune of £100,000. Mystery deposit went in on Monday, I found it last night and reported it this morning. Oh, and raised the interest rate on the dormant savings account it landed in, just in case I get to keep any of the interest it makes before its owner comes to claim it!

I did some quick googling and found two other people who had larger sums paid into their accounts accidentally, but 100k is nothing to sniff at... And nothing I'd misplace for as many as two days. Has anyone else here heard of anything like this?
  • It's not a month's mortgage payment, and if it is 2 months' interest then it it oddly specific (and the mortgage guy knew nothing about it) . . . plus, the mortgage was approved before the 19th August (although only called down last week, not sure when the offer that was mentioned is counted as starting)

Nobody has shouted for it yet . . .

Can Halifax really not identify the originator of the credit?

    Did you mean this link

I didn't see that one - I referred to the previous because of the explanation of the CHAPS process and the fact that it seemed that it should be possible for Halifax to find out where it originated?
  • It's broadly illegal under various money laundering legislation for a payment not to say where it came from. If it's CHAPS they will absolutely have the detailed SWIFT fields somewhere from the MT*** message.

...IF this is/was genuine....then every money laundering alarm bell would be ringing VERY loudly:rotfl:
  • I know, it sounds unbelievable... but that's why I took pictures of my phone (the Lloyds app wouldn't let me take a screenshot) and put it on my blog. It's gone now though - it was taken out yesterday with the code TO preceding my sort code & account no.

Sorry, I know this doesn't help the OP at all but I found this thread while looking up my own situation.
