Still... at least you don't have to worry about that £500 cluttering up your bank account anymore.0

I say its worth the risk. At the end of the day, buyers on eBay are ridiculously protected, when you're a genuine seller its annoying as hell, but means its a great place to buy. You will get your £500 back pretty quick if you don't receive what you ordered.
Worth a pop.0 -
Ebay very good for protecting buyers if item not as described, not received etc open a dispute, ive had to do it a few times in the past0

You understand that protection isn't free, you as a buyer pay for it through eBay fees, yes, yes eBay will charge as much in fees as they can but buyer protection must cost an arm and leg and encouraging these listings to appear on the site not only damages eBay's reputation but there are plenty of people who can just about use eBay and might lose their £500 because they don't know what to do.
All in all it's typical of today, take no responsibility for doing something stupid because there's a very slight chance you might gain something. In the game of chess you can never let your adversary see your pieces0 -

You don't pay to get your money back.
And no, eBay provide a website service it is their responsibility to filter out scammers and generally bad sellers, if they let them sell on their marketplace then they are deeming them respectable enough. It's not a buyers duty to filter out the rubbish, it shouldn't be on there at all. So the responsibility is quite rightly on eBay, not a buyer.0 -

There we go, it's apparently someone else's responsibility, no personal responsibility at all not to hand over £500 when you are, to quote the OP "not hopeful at all" you'll get anything in return. In the game of chess you can never let your adversary see your pieces0
