Hi

If that's the only size that's listed - in my opinion the discussion on other sizes stops now - I wouldn't fit any other size as all you are doing is giving an insurance company 'wriggle room' to reject a claim for damage to your car - they will always payout to a 3rd party - but will consider that you have 'modified' your car.
The brand choice is yours but I think that you are making a mistake by ruling out anything with sport in the name.
Half the tyres on the market have sport in the name and it really means nothing.
Yes sport generally means more grip but not always at the expense of tyre life.
The whole tyre thing is a compromise between safety and longevity.
There are tyres on the market that will last for ever and a day - just don't try going round corners on rainy days.
Exactly what car are we talking about here anyway?
And what load rating 96 or 100 ?
What speed rating W or Y ?
The spec of the tyre is chosen by the car maker for a reason but be careful you don't needlessly buy a tyre with expensive capabilities you do not need.0 -
Wear can be reduced dramatically but using the wonder gel, Puncture safe. Gives much better fuel economy too. Brilliant stuff and not awfully expensive.0

Yes, that's why I used the term 'generally' in my own post.... not always but more often than not.The brand choice is yours but I think that you are making a mistake by ruling out anything with sport in the name.

Ummmm, Don't take this the wrong way but, did you read my OP? Its just that my two stated requirements are stopping power in the wet and longevity, with a 'it would be nice' for them not to be too noisy. The whole tyre thing is a compromise between safety and longevity.

My apologies -
- Yes, I should have gone back and re-read it as it was 4 days ago and I read so much I forget where we started from.
The 100 load is the XL reinforced chiefly because you have an estate which by it's nature is often used for heavier loads than one would put in a saloon.
If I were looking for tyres and it was my car I would be fitting some which unfortunately have the dreaded word 'sport' in the name.
Continental ContiSportContact - 245/45 R18 100Y XL FR
The FR is for Flange Rim = an extra rubber strip on the sidewall to protect the alloy wheel.
Fuel Eff: C
Wet Grip: A
NoiseClass: 2 Noise: 72dB
These are pretty much accepted as 'state of the art' at the moment - and come first in many tests.
They should also be around £10 to £15 each cheaper than the Michelins.
They are Y rated for speed so would not present a problem insurance-wise. It's academic only as I don't imagine you even need W rating for foreign travel.0 -
Hi Iceweasel
Many thanks for your feed back, much appreciated. I will take a look at the tyres you mention, see if I can find any comparison on ware.Personal Responsibility - Sad but True
