    Hi

Thanks for everyone's posts. I'll try to clarify where needed.

I think you have two distinct elements here.

If you can hear a 1db difference then you are better than most

The Michelins are 71dB and I really don't want tires much noisier than that. I drive a fair few miles each year (approx 25k to 30k) and some of it is on concrete motorway which is horrendous so noise is a consideration and ideally not something I want to increase.

Not sure where this comes from as I haven't commented on the pro's / con's of budget tyres. And, as I'm looking to save money on Michelin's I am cognisant of hte fact that I may buy budget tyres this time.

From - or + £400 for 4 delivered , arrange your own fitting and balancing. About £10 a corner here in West Yorks . I have used the firm previously and was delighted at the saving and speed of delivery, less than 3 days from Poland to my door .

Your Primacy 3s come up at £516 .

I've hear some positive things about Uniroyals.

I have chosen, rightly or wrongly, to ignore the pricing on tyres containg the word 'sport'. The reason for this is that generally this means they are of a softer compound and will significantly impact on the 'wear' element of my requirements. I know I'm generalising but I'm going to stick by it.

Have you looked at what alternative wheels you could put on.

Probably a 17" or even 16" option that would be cheaper.

Perhaps going winter/summer might help with the longer term costs.

Yes, I have looked at buying a second set of slightly smaller wheels and adjusting the tyre size accordingly but..... I once got a comment (from a tyre place) about a cars suspension / geometry etc, etc all being set up for the size of wheels / tyres that are on the car so (as a lay person) I don't (currently) have the confidence to investigate the options for this.

If an experienced wheel/tyre person were to offer an opinion on an alternative I would be happy to investigate further the implications.

  • It's a diesel estate with 18's - same as an E39 M5!
It will drive better on smaller wheels.
Wheels are for styling, not for purpose (brake clearance).

You might save on tyres but you might also pay more for insurance.

All approved permutations of tyre sizes and tyre pressures will be on a label on the driver's door post.

I wouldn't fit any size that is not listed.

Should be OK if it is standard size for the vehicle as it won't be a mod.

    if in doubt ask,

if going to steel when ALL standard options were alloy worth checking.
