PS4 or Xbox One?

  • I still have my xbox 360 but will be looking to change in the January sales - to be honest I was hoping the xbox one would do more to convince me to move to that but it hasn't - will be switching to PS4.
  • I own both. There is a lot of polarised opinion the subject from people who have bought one console and feel they have to justify the decision for spending so much money by saying the one they didn't buy is rubbish.

Both are perfectly capable in their own right. Playstation are outselling Xbox by around a 10% margin, but if you wanted to bet on which company would still be around in 5 years then Microsoft with the Xbox is financially much more secure than Sony with its Playstation.

By far the biggest differentiator for these consoles is the simple question: "what do his friends use?" There is a lot more multiplayer gaming on these platforms - and if you don't own the same one as your friends, you can't play them.

Personally, I'd choose the Xbox over the Playstation as it feels more polished, and the voice recognition doesn't require me to put on an american accent to work. Sony have better specifications on paper - but as an electronics engineer who has studied the design of these systems I can tell you that in the real world, where games developers will be designing for both consoles, there will be absolutely no appreciable difference in gaming from either. Specs are for salesmen to pressure you,

The fact is that one of these consoles is a Lamborghini and the other one is a Ferrari. And if you're worrying about speed, they're both fast enough to be fun. To give you an analogy - the difference in specs is akin to arguing about the millisecond difference it takes to get from 95mph to 100mph: It is great for getting into arguments on the internet, but it makes so little difference to the actual driving. If these were washing machines one would have 52 different cycles and one would have 50. If they were handbags, one would be Prada, one would be Gucci. The difference is that you're not going to get nearly as much enjoyment out of it if you can't play your friends with it.

So get the one his friends have.

Just out of curiosity, what prevented you from doing that with one PC box fifteen years ago?

Although thank you for referencing the highlight feature for the consoles this gen. Xbox successfully brought online gaming from PC to console, 360 and PS3 brought "HD"(ish) gaming from PC to console, and this generation the Xbone and PS4 have introduced alt-tab. :D (It may sound like I'm mocking it, but it's really a great feature to have, as Carl31 says!)

probably things like on demand TV, Movies and downloadable games?

I know the hardware was around, but it wasn't supported by major players and networks like it is now. I suppose the Xbox one makes it more accessible to the everyday user
  • Oddly enough, I was set on the PS4 until I completed a swagdeals survey yesterday and it somehow swayed me into thinking the Xbox One was better.

There's still not enough decent games available on either for the money I'd have to spend on it at the moment, I think 2015 will be the year we see the first major games coming in (hopefully in line with some decent price drops to make the console sub-£300)

  • It's a tough call, PS4 or XBox1. I just want to share that in the company I work we have both the consoles in the playground. The XBox is like brand new, since all the games we have for it are solo. We have Fifa for the PS4 and let me tell you, the controllers are in a really bad shape just after 2 months of usage. The analogs are really !!!!!! and i would definitely not recommend them.
But for the big call, i would say neither. PC MASTER RACE!

Never been bothered about the console hardware. All that matters to me is how good the online functionality is, and how good the controller is, and for that reason, Xbox wins hands down for me.

...oh, and all my friends own them too.

That may be true. I personally couldn't do all of those things through a PC until around 2005 (Virgin Media On Demand for the TV and movies, Steam for downloadable games).

And just eight years later, the Xbone finally makes it possible again! Even my cheap old TV can play .mkv files, although it was nice for the One to finally add that feature last month. :D

    Still, the PS4 can't even play .mp3s.

I'd like to see one of the new consoles pull ahead in the chav charts. The PS3 was incredibly chavvy for its first few years, but this time the split seems relatively even (proportionally, that is).

    You've just made that up!

Weekly Hardware Chart 13th September 2014
Platform N. America Europe Japan Global
    PS4 178,291 187,962 23,196 472,885
    XOne 114,552 36,856 3,336 171,486

This week in Europe (includes UK) it's 187,962 vs 36,856 so XBox One is being hammered. Figures are high for both platforms due to Destiny boost.
