I agree with the premise but sometimes buyers don't get a choice of courier or delivery service - it's the seller that chooses.
One answer is "go to the shops" of course, which may or may not be an option.0 -
Wasn't sure which board to put this in so apologies if I guessed wrong.
Just wondering if anyone has a clue what the info on an order details means with Hermes.
I've got an Amazon delivery due and the courier is Hermes. It's due any day now...or in the next week. I have just been sent through the tracking details from Hermes (I got the tracking number a week ago but only got the Hermes email earlier today).
So far it reads:
DateTimeStatus
12/09/2014 08:32 Courier Received
12/09/2014 05:53 Out For Delivery
12/09/2014 01:45 Processed at Depot

11/09/2014 20:14 Hub Sorter Receipt Scan
11/09/2014 09:16 Order Generated
And I just wondered if anyone has used Hermes and would be able to work out what that means in layman's terms, are we talking about this arriving in hours or days or weeks?
from my experience hermes tracking status means absolutly nothing. Iv had stuff left without it showing as delivered, and had stuff dumped in various locations/address days after the tracking shows as "delivered".
Hermes have messed up amazon orders to us but amazon have been great at getting it sorted, so I would not worry about an amazon order via hermes.0 -

IMO they're all as bad as each other, none holding contact details if your experiencing issues or want any estimated arrival time, DPD give an estimated time but they stole all my Christmas items one year.
I'd won items from a competition and the prizes were due to be delivered, that they took their time I just thought was because I'd won something rather than ordered something but after a month I contacted the company involved and asked how long they would take. I was told they were already sent out and signed for. I pursued it and was sent an email clearly showing a signed "A". I really wanted/needed the prizes as I was very poor at the time and these were going to be gifts for my family at Christmas, I had a then 6 year old niece at the time and was looking forward to giving a gift to her that was actually not a bit rubbish and involved trained smiles and "thankyou's" through embarrassed glances from me- same for my mum and so on.
The company sent out the items to me again, still nothing. I asked the courier why my mail was not arriving and to their side they did look into it, though only after I'd gotten the Police involved and it turned out they were being delivered to a wrong address- same door number, different street (how a courier could make this mistake is still beyond me). I pushed it further with the company who had created the competition, they were now no longer communicating with me and I had to go back to DPD and the Police, neither who were contacting me now.
In the end I got a random knock at the door one morning, it was a courier whose badge showed his name was "Andrew". He had a black bin bag and handed it to me, said that the parcels were taken to his sorting office and "got a bit bashed up". He left. I went inside to see what was inside the bag- several replicas of a few of the items I'd won, the things of lesser value, all the decent parts of the prize and I'd imagine any replicas of them sent afterwards were not there.
I tried again with the Police, with the courier, neither who contacted me back, days before Christmas and no way I could replace them.
So IMO, they're all as bad as each other, either they don't hold any respect for the customer -who on earth can just take the day off and wait in all day every day for a week for an item to possibly arrive at any point within 12 to 18 hours- is this a service for the strictly unemployed without any medical issues/appointments or volunteer/work placements- no one like that can afford to shop online anyway! It can't even be a service designed for those who are afraid of going out due to social phobia- (which I've had in the past for a long time before anyone thinks I'm trying to ridicule this disorder!) because the worst part of the delivery is not knowing when it's going to turn up- the anxiety would knock someone with social phobia over the edge!
Sorry- I could wax on about this for days on end. I am yet to find a courier service who actually offers a useful service- have to say Royal Mail is just about the only one I'd suggest has any value and that's only because they tend to deliver within a certain time (late morning, early afternoon) they don't deliver after a certain time and if you can't collect an item and it goes to a delivery office, it's not miles out of the way at the end of a train line with zero public transport within a 30 minute walk.

I think even if you opted to pay more for delivery you'd still get the same courier service, only at an earlier date. A week away is what I got, ordering fast-track would have had the same deal happening a day later I'd imagine.
Also, totally agree- not always an option when your ordering from Amazon. Why they can't offer a better format for delivery is still confusing to me- delivery to high street stores, supermarkets or even Royal Mail sorting offices would be an idea.0 -
Gosh, you've had a terrible time. I sympathise.who on earth can just take the day off and wait in all day every day
Most working people I know get parcels delivered to their place of work.
DH can't do that so he has them delivered to mine.
If it's a workplace then yes - there normally is someone to accept deliveries Monday-Friday even if the recipient isn't present.
If you're single, have horrible neighbours and can't get parcels at work then I guess you have to take that into account when deciding whether to buy on-line or at a store. Most places do offer next day delivery albeit at an extra charge.
Not all couriers are like you say though.
Hermes are a very cheap option where normal people deliver parcels in their own car. They are paid a pitance so clearly they have to try to combine areas and streets and that's why it takes longer.
The "next day" services like DHL/interlink are usually pretty realible in my experience.
I didn't buy Xmas presents last year because of unemployment.
I explained to my family and they were all great.
Certainly the adults in your family should understand and support you at a time of poverty.
The theft is horrible but don't mix it up with issues of horrible neighbours or an unsupportive family.
You have my sympathy though.0 -

I get my family saying the same thing either (as I'm far from rolling in it) but I hate not giving gifts at Christmas, I like to try to do *something* and often make gifts, but they take time and having all of a few days to attempt to do this after realizing the parcels were not going to arrive that year was not enough time- I normally would need to start putting things together months in advance which is why I was really pleased when I found I'd won as trying to make a gift isn't as easy as it sounds again for many reasons! I'm an old sentimental at heart, I like to give gifts because it makes me feel good, even if they're never going to be as amazing as I'd like them to be- I'd feel pretty depressed if I wasn't able to do this, however small the gifts are.The theft is horrible but don't mix it up with issues of horrible neighbours or an unsupportive family.
I know that theft is theft and don't blame the entire courier sector for this but it does make me feel cautious as a result when dealing with that particular company as they had done so little to resolve the problem, not even apologising, it doesn't fill me with faith for the company shall we say, because subsequent deliveries I made in the following years had the same "Andrew" delivering my parcels- if only I could have controlled the courier in those experiences just to express voting with my feet!0 -
Have you looked at Amazon locker? They deliver to somewhere near to you and then you pick up the parcel. Many are convenience stores with long opening hours.0

I had thought about that, but renting a locker seemed (when I last checked) more expensive then paying for a designated delivery hour, but then that was a good few years ago when I last looked, I always think to myself "how bad can it BE?!" to which I suddenly realise, only after waiting in for a delivery which yet again arrives late or in the last possible half hour of that day. I never seem to learn...:cool:0 -
did you get the parcel?0
