A Hudl is a Tesco branded tablet made by Wistron. It runs the standard Android OS (Jelly Bean) with a very lightly 'Tescofied' interface which I believe can be easily removed.
Kindle Fire, like all Kindle devices, locks you into their own walled garden, just as an iPad does to Apple's.No free lunch, and no free laptop

Thats just it, Apple made a shrewd decision with the 8" iPad mini it is just the right size for kids/travel, holding for long periods etc. The Android brigade seem to have gone mainly for 7", 8" ones being rarer and more expensive. For a kid with small fingers and good eyesight though, maybe a Hudl is an OK choice.
Maybe there'll be a slew of 2nd hand iPad minis next spring when the iPhone 6 plus starts to make an impact - the iPad mini (oldest model) would make a very good kids tablet except for cost.0 -
Is the nook any good?0

She's four, got fingers like pencil ends, 7" is a great size for her. I use a 7" tablet with my big sausage fingers quite happily, so she'll be fine. And the screen is plenty plenty big enough for games. Hudl is the bottom end of the worthwhile models, more money will get more power or screen resolution, but she's four, not editing 4k videos!0

Yes the 9" HD Nook is very good. Can only download from the Play store not Amazon though. It's been going cheap lately.0

These sort of things might be landfill but at these prices the child could build a new driveway.
