  • I just assumed the £100 a month was an unsubstantiated guess :)

May explain why there's a Vectra on the drive and not a £60k motor.
  • Dear me, do some people actually judge one another and try to work out their wealth or lack of it by the car on their drive, what sad little lives.

Some people have an aversion to paying interest, their bank balances and financial security might surprise those who feel the need to wave their wad about.

Very amusing guys, my figures were guestimates, a lot has happened in the property market over the last 6 years, interest rates have changes, property prices have fallen and risen and fallen again.
The point wasn't to give you an estimate of my finances, the point was to agree with the other poster that paying off that mortgage is far more important than having a fancy motor on the drive.

Other people have other priorities. Some people can do both - they can pay off their mortgage in a timeframe they're happy and have a nice car and some niceties in life.

Whats the point in eking out a living for the best years of your life, just so you can get your mortgage paid a bit earlier? "Sorry kids - no holidays this year as i want to make an extra payment on the mortgage!"

Its about finding the right balance - some people are happy with a particular standard of living that allows them to pay their mortgage sooner, some people find a balance point that works for them, some people go to the other extreme and live for today.

I just cant get my head around those people on here being judgemental because other people chose a different route through life than they do, then project a worst case scenario onto that person as how they must really be living.

I'm not sure what that achieves? If you're really happy with your own life, why do some people go on the attack about how others chose to life theirs?

If someone choses to finance a Range Rover and take out a warranty insurance plan, why does it matter to anyone but them?

One of the blokes who works for me just turned up in a new model Audi TT. Got a spin in it, lovely car. But it didnt make me want to go "how dare you drive that car! I know you have it on finance and therefore cant afford it! Do you not realise its not your place to drive such a car???". Nope, i'm just happy hes happy. :)

A lot of bigoted views being expressed here.

Especially the veiled jealousy inherent in describing someone as having a 'fancy car'.

Thank God we are allowed to be different.

Seeing someone as some sort of fool because they have a particular type of car rather than a paid for house is just nonsense.

People are allowed to have differing priorities in life.

Thank God too that I life in a democratic country rather than a state where better cars and better houses are proscribed by the rules of some misguided dictator.

There seems to be some sort of self-sacrifice too in being able to say "My house is all paid for, and I spent years driving bangers in order to be able to do that."

My house has no mortgage, and I 100% own my car - but I would never pass judgement on someone who has done things in a different order from me, or with a different set of goals in life.

I have no regrets about having owned expensive 'up-market' cars that I have enjoyed driving - I certainly didn't buy them to impress people.

Was just listening on the radio this morning about some american billionaire has over the last 25 years given away something like $5.5 Billion to good causes - and he doesnt even own his own home.

Makes you wonder doesnt it about the aspiration to "own" your own home to consider yourself successful.

Explains "right to buy", how to be successful whilst living off the state.

You're right - everyone should live on a park bench until such times as they've saved up every last penny for their own home.

How dare people rent! Living beyond their means pretending they can afford to buy a house.

When renting costs just as much as a mortgage?
