Commuting Distance

I know people who live in various parts of the UK and commute to London.
They work 3 or 4 days in London so the commute is well worth the money.
Daily or stay there? If they are staying in London then its arguably not really their commute.
I do just under 40 miles as the crow flies but its into the City and so its public transport. Takes 1hr45 in and I allow it to take 2hrs back to guarantee a seat on the train back
The longest I knew was 145 miles/ ~3.5 hours which was a guy commuting down from derby daily but that was because it was a new job and his girlfriend was 7 months pregnant with their first kid. He lost the job, not commuting related, but the intent had been to relocate closer to London once the sprog was out and settled.0 -
I can see my house from my office, takes me two minutes to walk.
Previous to that I was working in either Hatfield or Darlington, living in NorthantsIt's taken me years of experience to get this cynical0 -
I think it's more about time taken - and mode of transport - than distance.
I studied for a Masters degree with the OU almost exclusively while commuting, and later found it useful time for reading reports etc. (I live near end of line so almost always guaranteed a seat).
I had a job with a 90 minute commute but no public transport and really resented that wasted time because I had to drive. There wasn't even good radio reception for much of the journey. It was a great job that really raised my profile in my sector.
As for maximum distance - I also did the Monday - Friday commute from Scotland to London. Well worth it for the job.
This, for many reasons i.e I have a friend who travels 30 miles each way to work but through country roads so takes him over a hour to get there i.e 6 miles to town from his cottage in middle of nowhere, then 20 miles through country roads to work through small towns and villages, then gets to large town he works in then 4 miles out to supermarket.
He does this on minimum wage so has gotten into debt to do this but does not want to be unemployed which is a great way to be just shame its affecting his mental health.0 -
The worst commute I had was a couple of hours each way to travel 60 miles which was a mix of walking and the train which was frequently delayed in the evening taking a lot longer. It was hard going as during the week I didn't really have any time to myself and at the weekend too tired to do anything. However at the time I badly needed more eexperience in the field and that's what I got, I'd do the commute again if it was worth it in the long term.

one of the guys where i work does a 3 hour commute each way every day he lives in essex and drives to MK every day leaves home at 5am and gets back around 7pm
he is being moved over here but the family couldnt find a house and move in time so he does the commute he is always shattered and is pretty rubbish so i think it also depends on how it will affect your capability for work
personally i wouldnt do over an hour each way
my commute is 6 minutes but has taken 2 hours (bottleneck roundabout on the way one little crash and there is now way to escape)The only people I have to answer to are my beautiful babies aged 8 and 50 -
I gave up a really well paid job on Friday after commuting about 1:30 to 1:45 hrs each way so up to 3:1\2 hours a day driving(65 ish miles each way ) .
But on top of a stress full job working 8 + hours a day it was really starting to impact family life. Leaving at 7:30 and getting home between 8 and ,9pm.
I've been lucky to find another job 20 mins from where I live , I'll be earning abouthalf what I did in other job ,but I hope I can manage as having over 3 hours a day back will mean I'll cook more from scratch, won't need a cleaner & will drink less as not as stressed and buy the kids less out of guilt.
Its all about balance and what's right for you and your family as everybody's circumstances are different .Grocery Challenge Feb 14 £500 / Spent £572.10!
March 14 £500 / spent £488.45 :j0 -
Thanks for all the responses. It's really interesting to see everyone's opinions. Someone once said to me that they thought a commute of at least half an hour was a necessity just to be able to wake up and get in the right frame of mind for work. It's something that's always stayed with me and I think could be very true.
I used to live literally across the road from the office in my old job and I never felt fully 'with it' first thing in the morning.Total Debt - £17,850.57
Long road to being debt free!0 -
I did years doing between 40-65 miles each way.
Now I do 35 miles each way.
The fuel costs are high.0 -

I'm the opposite, my commute used to have me over thinking what was going to happen during the working day as well as concentrating on the traffic, now I just wander round, sit down and get on with what I planned to do before leaving the night before. It's taken me years of experience to get this cynical0 -
I guess 20 miles each way..
I drive to the station (london zone 6) parking in £6 a day. train ticket is £240 a month ish and my office is in central London.
