Commuting Distance

I think it's more about time taken - and mode of transport - than distance.

I studied for a Masters degree with the OU almost exclusively while commuting, and later found it useful time for reading reports etc. (I live near end of line so almost always guaranteed a seat).

I had a job with a 90 minute commute but no public transport and really resented that wasted time because I had to drive. There wasn't even good radio reception for much of the journey. It was a great job that really raised my profile in my sector.

As for maximum distance - I also did the Monday - Friday commute from Scotland to London. Well worth it for the job.

IMO. Any commute that takes more than an hour, the job isnt worth it. I don't care how much you're earning.

  • I'm currently being considered for a job 28 miles away there and 28 back (done further before..) so not alone
though I did also tick the I'd relocate box as well on this one!

There was a discussion on the radio that we make happier employees because we've gone for jobs we really want and I really think it true! :) even if there is a lot against it, you only live once

I definitely agree. We spend so much of our lives at work (as depressing a thought as that is) so we should all get a little enjoyment out of it. I'm just keen to not lose the work/life balance but after figuring out what I want to do (at the age of 28!) and only living in a small town it's the only way I'm going to get the right experience.

That's a really good point. I would have to commute to Birmingham so would be keen to get the train as the roads there are horrible. I am hoping to start an OU course in February so the time on the train would really help!

I work 34 miles away and use a mix of car, train and bike to get to and from work.

Most days I travel in by train, but a couple days a week I ride home. Fridays I have to travel further so go by car.

Its more about the time it takes and the mode of transportation than the actual distance. I work only 5 miles from my home- same town but other side of the river and it can take up to an hour to get there on bad traffic days. I would tolerate a longer commute by public transport than by car as on train or bus you can use the time for something eg reading, playing games on phone, whatever. With driving that is all you can do.
Pre children I would consider a 30 mile commute but possibly not now.

I know people who live in various parts of the UK and commute to London.

They work 3 or 4 days in London so the commute is well worth the money.

    I spent 6 years commuting 4 hours a day.
  • The universe was smiling on me when I was offered my current job. I live two streets away from my office...in London! It takes me around five minutes to walk in. I think it's payback for the 6 year horror of commuting in London in my previous role :)

I have 24 mile 35 minute drive then 10mins walk to station then 30 minutes on the train and 10 minute walk. It's not the best but it means my family lives in a house rather than a flat and that's a small price to pay.
Its Vegas time -no longer :T a five year old has changed Vegas time to Orlando time
