Commuting Distance

Hi Everyone,
I'm just wondering what is the maximum distance that people would commute for work?
I currently work about 11 miles from home, which is a short drive but I am looking for a new job and all of the ones that would further my career are 30+ miles away. Is this a distance that a lot of people would be willing to travel? Just interested to see if this is a common thing or not.
Thanks

well i currently commute 90 miles each day, approx 1hr 30.
Leave the house at 6.30, get in just after 8am. and the reverse in the evenings.
I have to go where the work is. Its a bit of a bind, but not the worse commute i've ever done, and get to work from home on a friday, so it evens out a bit.2014 running challenge 471.95 km / 1000 km.0 -

That's a hefty commute! Is that a lot of motorway driving too?
That's the thing really, having to go where the work is seems to be what we have to do. I think working close to home is a bit of a luxury these days.Total Debt - £17,850.57

I commute just under 30 miles a day to work when I am not working from home.
My main consideration was not how far but how long it would take me, and was it worth it in terms of career, prospects etc. It was.
So yes it is 30 miles or so, but apart from about 2 miles each side it is all fairly quiet motorway which is great. If it was 30 miles on back roads, B-roads, or a motorway like the M62 or similar it may be a different story.0 -
I used to have a five minute walk to work but I worked with people who travelled over an hour by train. One guy took almost 90 minutes to drive in each day, no motorway driving involved at all.
Depends whether you think the job is worth it.0 -
I'm currently being considered for a job 28 miles away there and 28 back (done further before..) so not alone
though I did also tick the I'd relocate box as well on this one!

One of my longest commutes was 10 miles...not much but it could take me 15 minutes or two hours to get there as the road would frequently get blocked (and still does!). The longest it took me was 3 hours but at least my immediate manager was 2 cars in front of me and the office manager 5 cars in front so knew it was not my fault.
Unfortunately, it was the only route in, I could divert a little at the start but it would make no difference as that part rarely got blocked. We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.

I would commute 150 miles for the right money. For minimum wage I'd commute no more than 3 miles (walking or cycling) or for just £5 more per day I commute whatever distance 1 bus journey takes me in under an hour which is 12 miles. For an extra £8 per day I would use 2 buses and that would get me 16 miles away in under 90 minutes. For an extra £6,000 per year I'd buy a car and commute up to 20 miles. Even then I probably wouldn't be any better off. For an extra £40,000 per year I'd commute up to 150 miles each way by car to the train station including parking and high speed train to the destination and a taxi at the other end (which would most probably be London) which would take 2.5 hours each way....although in reality I'd probably just get somewhere to stay near to where the job is during the week.:footie:

I used to drive 30 miles to/from work for an old job which I did for a year and hated. I had to drive (no direct trains and it would have meant 3 changes). There was always constant traffic and I had numerous occasions where it took me 2/3 hours to get to work when there were accidents (going past M25 junction 10, towards London).
I now have nearly a 25 mile commute which I've been doing for nine months but I only have a short drive to the station and then 29 minutes on the train. Not too bad at all.
For me personally, I'd be willing to travel further where there is good, reliable, regular public transport, but no way would I drive that far again on a regular basis.0 -
25 miles each way, 6 days a week. Worth every second of it though! It takes around 2 hours, as I'm on public transport, but its two trains, a tram and a bus. Oh and a 15 minute walk too.0
