    Depends on your budget.
If you dont mind spending close to £300-500, you could get a iRobot Roomba.
Excellent workhorse - Set it up and does the vacuum for you. The only place it cannot do is the stairs.
PS: You might still need a back up vacuum cleaner for the occasional corner it misses (its not a necessity!!)

I have has a henry for nearly 20 years. Gets kicked down the stairs, kicked out of the back of my van. Never use bags with it and never goes wrong.

This week I nought a new house for it as it had split, but thats the first replacement part in its entire life.

    Can't recommend them highly enough.

I would rather dig a hole than use a Henry as using one is similar to digging a hole, they are hard work.
1438 5* reviews, they must be useless.

Miele Cat and Dog. Best reasonably priced vacuum hands down.

Basics-do you want an upright or a cylinder model? For carpets or hard floors? Budget-a decent new vac will cost you £250+.
If an upright, get a recon Dyson DC07 or DC14 (with a clutch if hard floors). £100 to £120.
Avoid cheap supermarket brands under £100 like the plague.

    Depends on your budget.

Yes I forgot to mention some much needed info like budget, looking to pay around the £100/£120 mark.

    Be used 100% on carpets

Upright or cylinder though? Your budget is far too low to get a decent machine new. Recon only at that price.

    And sometimes even cheaper!

I got mine for £80 and got just under 2000 Nectar points at the same time.
