the expensive part is the sewerage bill NOT the actuial water bill in the first place

Not in my area - Severn Trent and in most other areas either!

How do you reach that conclusion?

Correct me if I am wrong but you are the man(a builder) who took on the water company about the water supplied to your swimming pool and fish pond.

You(understandably) objected to paying the drainage element on the metered water to fill the pond and swimming pool on the grounds that that water will not be returned through the sewerage system.

However your situation is unusual in that most people don’t have swimming pools and artificial ponds.

I also think that you should declare an interest in that you are now selling meters for those in your situation or who use large amounts of water in their garden/washing cars etc.

Whilst I applaud you for your stance; I suggest that the average user will need to use huge amounts of water for the garden etc to recoup the high cost of buying your meter; bearing in mind that the water companies give an allowance for water not returned to the sewer.

However above all on this forum you must declare if you are selling products; which you are!!!

I wonder if everyone opt out for metering, how the water companies are going to recoup their income? Only by increasing the water charges and we will end up paying more. Or am I getting paranoid?

I'm going on a meter next week and I'm hoping that, if lots of people go over to meters and use less water the water companies will recoup money by having to provide, clean and deal with less water as demand will go down. Therefore their costs will be lower. I'm a bit paranoid about it too, more about leaks though. Time will tell!
  • I've just received my first 6 month water bill with a water meter I had fitted 8 months ago, £ 93.54, of which £21.69 is for the water I've used, £ 13.79 for sewerage, and a whooping £58.06 for standing charges !

The water used is 21 cubic metres, which is supposed to be normal.

This means that for a year I will pay £187.08 for a metered supply, when my rateable bill was previously £ 119.00 !

I live ialone in a 2 bed terraced victorian house, apart from when my twins stay, of which I'm there 2-3 nights a week?

I rang South East Water to ask if the bill is correct, which apparently it is, I asked how they can have the cheek to charge over 60% of the bill as standing charges !

They said that the standing charges vary for RV bills and metered bills, i.e South East water charge £ 12.00 for RV bills, but £ 15.00 for metered supplies, and thames water charge £ 31.00 for RV bills and £ 42.00 for metered supplies !

If having a meter does not give me savings, when I'm using hardly any water, I can't understand how it gives others in similar situations saving ?

Am I being ripped off anyone ?

I seem to be one of the few that have ended up worse off with a meter !!

Everything depends on the Rateable Value(RV) of your property when you are unmetered. A 2 bed Victorian house will presumably have a very low RV which accounts for your very low unmetered bill. A bigger modern house might pay several times more than you pay.

With a metered bill it doesn't matter about the size of your house - a huge 8 bed terrace house would pay the same if they used the same amount of water.

Actually 21 cubic meters in 6 months is below average for 1 person.(the average is 60pa per person)

If you changed to a meter less than a year ago - you can change back to an unmetered tariff; and I would as you are unlikely to ever get a metered bill around £120pa

I have just moved to the Birmingham area. My new home has a water meter which concerned me even before we moved. I have spoken to a neighbour and now i am really worried. She pays £100 a month!! I have seen her statements and am really panicking. They are a very large family but i also have a large family. Theres no way i can afford to pay that much. I have asked and received a form to see if i can get my water bill capped. We are provided by severn trent. Any advice any-one?

  • If you have 3 or more children under 16 or in full time ed, get a meter and you are entitled to unlimited water use at a capped fixed rate.....contact your local authority and ask for a claim pack.
