  • Sanoffo, don't suppose you know how much quotes were including box frames?

No, sorry. I'd imagine it would be half the price again per window at least. Get some more quotes in... we had 6 quotes which were pretty wide ranging. Went with local fitter as seemed most trustworthy.

Paying cash will save you £500 odd also ;)
  • Hi,
Sorry for resurrecting this thread but in dire need of any updates that the OP can provide.
    Thanks.

  • Hi,

Our latest quote including vat, painting, service etc... is £1788 per window. The window price direct from the same supplier is £1040 inc vat. Have you had any quotes for a similar product?
  • Hmm...how did the quote go from £1400 to £1788?? A different company?

I've had just one quote. Apparently my panes are too thin and the sashes not the best so replacement double-glazed sashes, keeping existing frame with relevant repairs coming up to £800/850 or so per window.

Mentioned "red pine" and had not heard of FENSA so made me wary.

The windows you mention (£1040), are they by Blairs or some other company? Can any joiner then do the fitting?

Can we discuss by PM if this is too public?

    Thanks.

think levellers advice is spot on for anyone thinking of fitting timber box sashes . Your paying top dollar for a very expensive and difficult system to make . about 1500 per frame fitted is about right .

This value is for the complete window, right? Sash and frame? Hmm...

why the Hmmm at the end ? what is value ? personally no its not but I could say that being charges £250 to put £60 brake shoes on my van works out at about £400 per hour. I had a QC recently working for £1100 a day plus VAT and costs that was value for money . the workmanship that goes into a decent modern box sash is second to none and the places knocking out plastic or standard casement windows could not / should not and would not even try to make a box sash . if I had a box sash made for my home it of tomorrow . except and accept the double glazing may fail . I do not expect to change them again in my lifetime and I haven't reached 50 (yet) its just a bit of wood knocked together then fitted into a hole agreed but there has been a bit of work and hours already spent before you meet the fitter .

greenface, I was asking if that price (£1500) was for the complete wooden window i.e. DG sashes and frame.

Some quotes have come up to £1200 just for new DG sashes with refurbishment of existing case/frame hence the "hmm..."

cheers . the sashes renewal always depends on the condition of the original box sashes . so often the draughts need to be sorted with new bushes a complete new weight system to allow for double glazing. often its like sticking lipstick on a pig . there are joiners who specialising in box sash repairs its a specialist job and they should know what they are doing . prices for repairs in a conservation area and listed buildings match the extra effort that's needed .

  • I'm now leaning towards trying DIY draughtproofing although my bedroom windows seem not to have much by way of gaps at the sides. Reason being that I want to see if it will be worth the expense of professional draught proofing and window refurbishment.
