Severe Disability Premium

so sorry if this has been asked previously..

I currently receive Income Related ESA & in the support group.
I recently have been awarded PIP at the high rate daily living. (since applying last year)
yesterday i received a letter asking me to fill out a form for severe disability premium.
I already receive a enhanced one in my esa, so confused what this one is?
i Live on my own with my son & no one gets carers allowance for me. Unsure if this makes me entitled.

TIA

    They are two different premiums:
    - enhanced disability is paid if you receive high rate care DLA, the enhanced care rate of PIP or are in the support group
    - severe disability is paid if you receive mid or high rate care DLA or either care rates of PIP and are living alone or classed as and no-one receives carers allowance for you.

You are entitled to claim both premiums if you meet the criteria for both.

    You're welcome. :)

Children are ignored when it comes to the severe disability premium. Unless he's over 18 and you don't receive benefits for him because he's not in education.

Just a random aside, the massive ESA backlogs are affecting the SDP claim processing times. At present I've been waiting six weeks for my SDP form to be processed. When I rung today to ask on the status of the form, the lady informed me it's in the "queue" but there's a huge backlog.

Basically it'll take a long time but payment is backdated.
  • Mine's the same, I've been waiting since June/July. You'd think it would be a really easy benefit to process (the DWP should know the answers to all the questions already) but apparently not.

I didn't realise this, I thought it was an either or! Thanks!
  • Thank you all for your replies :)

Ive heard about the esa backlog, i was told not to worry if i don't get a letter about reassessment when its due as they are trying to work through a backlog of new claims. My SPD will prob be right at the bottom lol.. I had never heard about it until i received a letter asking me to fill it in x
  • Is the SPD backdated from the original PIP claim date?

Yes your SDP will be backdated to the original decision of PIP as long as you have been in receipt of income based benefits.
Forums can be/are a good guide to entitlement and it is good practice to back it up with clarification from the relevant department/specialist with written confirmation to safeguard yourself.
  • i was always under the impression if anyone live with you then you was not entitled to it? is that not the case?

so if someone get high mob and low rate care they have 1 child living with them who's under 16 can they get the SDP?

or do thye have to get MED/HIGH rate care to get the SDP even if they have a child living with them under 16?
