Money Moral Dilemma: Should I pay towards my friend's plane ticket?

  • I've won a freebie ticket to New York for a trip I'm going on with a friend. She still has to pay full whack for her ticket and wants me to pay half? Should I stump up the cash?

I'd say the friend was as deseprate as MSE appears to be to increase its post count.
    Just saying.

Pretty standard really. Go alone if you don't want to pay their half.

If you want a mate as company, and they won't go for the full price, you have your choices on the table.

I don't think your friend is being unreasonable asking, and I don't think you'd be unreasonable to refuse and go on your own.

Yes, it's simply a hypothetical question set by MSE folks!
  • If the holiday was booked before the win then no, I wouldn't pay half.

From your point of view it's a lose/win situation. You have a free trip and now you're expected to be 'X' out of pocket so your friend saves money.

Look at it from another way, imagine you and a friend went to a garage to both buy the same type of new car. You both agreed to pay £10k for your respective vehicles but you entered a draw that meant you could win the car for free. If you then won would it be fair for your friend to ask you to pay for half of their car? Bear in mind this is going to be their own vehicle and you're not going to get any ownership of it or be able to drive it around. Of course not, it's your win solely not a joint win.

Surely the simplest answer is to give away the free ticket to a better friend, and you both can stay at home.

You can then feel smug and virtuous, and your importunate 'friend' can feel guilty and/or miffed!
  • It's rude of your friend to ask, but it's equally rude of you not to offer.

Do you think of it as 'my trip with her tagging along' or do you think of it as 'our trip'?

If it's the first option, you're not real friends.
  • I'm surprised you're even having to think about it. You were going anyway. So share your good luck with your friend - that way, you gain by paying half the price you were going to. And your travelling companion knows they're a true friend. No brainer.
  • It's solely your win so your friend really shouldn't expect to get half of it but if they were a really good friend then you probably would have offered to share your good fortune anyway. I think the fact that they asked you to go half would really rankle with me and make me not want to share.
  • If you had already planned and booked this trip with your friend and then you won your ticket after (pretty lucky!), then I would be inclined to share my good fortune with my friend so as to not make them feel bad. Presuming that they are a good friend and they would do the same to you.

If they are a fly-by-night or a casual acquaintance and you won the trip first and she tagged along then NO.
