Money Moral Dilemma: Should I pay towards my friend's plane ticket?

I think it depends on how the overall relationship is with a friend.
If I have a voucher for dinner, I will split the cost with a friend and not use the whole voucher for myself.
If the friend is overall a good one where you have a balanced relationship then I would pay a little, maybe not half. If the friend in general is a little selfish then I would find someone else to go with.
How will it work with meals out & hotel etc? Will you be paying 50/50? Does she tend to order more over dinner than you eg alcohol where you are always paying more than your share?0 -
You have arranged to go away with your friend and you are each responsible for paying your share. It shouldn't matter to your friend if you are paying by cash, cheque, credit card or voucher as long as you pay your share. Your friend is then responsible for the other half.
I have just returned from a holiday with my partner and another couple. The other couple had won a voucher for £1000 which they used and we paid our half. There was no question on either side of us benefitting from their good fortune. Of course, I was a little envious but did not feel entitled to gain anything from it.
Why not treat your friend to dinner or an outing whilst you are away? It may be a token gesture but your friend will hopefully appreciate it.0 -
A little bit more info is needed here....
Was the trip planned before or after you won the ticket?
If you said to your friend "I've won this free ticket for myself, do you want to come (and pay) with me?", then you really should have offered her some incentives as you won the ticket, if not half the cost, then paying for meals / hotel / attractions.
BUT....... she shouldn't have asked you to pay for half her ticket.
If you won the ticket after the trip was planned BEFORE you won the ticket then she definitely shouldn't have asked, but I still think you should offer something, although she definitely shouldn't expect it.0 -
I had a bf who had the same attitude as your friend.
He seemed to think that a competition win was a freebie. My point was that I had to pay for the laptop and the electricity. It also took a couple of hours of my time daily to do the entries.
If I won a couple of tickets and took him, I thought that he should drive as he was getting a free evening out.0 -
If I had won a ticket then I would share half of it with my friend, so that we would each pay 50% of the ticket price. A friend is a friend after all, whatever "type" of friend they are. The fact your friend asked just shows how open you can be with each other.
Have a heart, after all, on your death bed will you think "thank god I didn't pay for half of their ticket"? I doubt it. 💝0 -
I actually think that is very rude of your friend to ask. Think of it this way: would she pay half of your flight cost if it was her who had won.0

If you asked her to go because you had won a free ticket and wanted company then you should contribute to hers. If you were both going anyway and the win came later then I think its yours to take advantage of of but perhaps you could be a bit generous with the meals and sightseeing when you get there.
Sensible advice from Mrs Soup, just what I was thinking!0 -

I think it's a bit of a cheek asking, unless she's short of cash and knows that you're not. Nevertheless, she shouldn't expect you to cough up; I'd be inclined to go with a different "friend".0
