I consider myself to be both British and Scottish, and proud to be both. I don't want to not be Scottish and I have no choice but to be British, but I want to be anyway. If the worst happens I will apply for dual citizenship, which I'll be entitled to do.
Constitutionally that will be the only way to be both. It's not often I disagree with you Savvy, but I do on this. That's ok.....we can disagree :p
As someone who has spent most of their career working for the government in this country, I'd strongly disagree that we have no weight on the world stage. We do, in so many different areas. For our size we have a phenomenal defence service, we have some of the best free health care and research anywhere on the planet, we have a justice system that puts the majority of the world to shame. None of that is perfect by any means.....but if you look at the positives of it......we're not too shabby as we are :)

I posted much of this on a thread about what there is to like about our country.

Oh what the heck, I'll quote myself, I've no shame.

Freedom of Speech (at speakers corner)
    No death penalty.
Unarmed police (one of the last two countries in the world to manage this).
    Trial by jury.
If you're ill you're treated for free.
    Bloodless change of government.
    Lack of extremist politics.
    Tolerance.
The most understated state religion ouside Scandinavia, diverse religious freedom.
    Professional non-political army.
    Shelter for the homeless
    Assistance for the jobless.
    Rights for the disabled.
    Really decent music.
    Formerly great TV,
    improving film industry.
    Good theatre.
    Pubs
Travel around the islands without internal/ external passports. Free education.
Good universities and widespread access to Higher Education.

The lack of a need for photo ID cards.
The presumption of innocence until proven guilty.
The assumption that everything not illegal is allowable
    The military competency.
The use of a universal language.
The usefulness of being a global transport hub.
    The international links (Europe/commonwealth/anglosphere)
The assumption that commerce isn't everything.
The relatively low tax rates (well compared with some countries).
Willingness to try foreign food (even villages will have a variety of foreign food choices).
    Lack of adverts interrupting TV.
    Diversity of team sports
The way we look after prisoners.

There's plenty of pluses without having to become like Billy Britain from Viz :)
Loads more but we need to spell it out and realise many countries even in Europe didn't have any of this until very very recently.

Having said that, I totally despise the ridiculous press coverage of the campaign and see the YES campaign as the underdog. I keep expecting to read a headline that the capital of Scotland is Narnia and the currency is the raindrop but due to its dwindling rainfall it'll be broke by tomorrow. :rotfl:

:kisses3: I agree with some of that. But emotions are a very important part of life too, just as important as detail.
We need a hybrid :D:p :rotfl:

But, ah..., if it were run by autistic people and only autistic people then emotions would not be part of life anymore. If the entire world was autistic, then (on this argument) it would not be a very important part of life. :rotfl:Does this force you to change your perceptions of how things are - or of how they could be? (Why do we make assumptions, based on what we currently have and therefore only on what we currently know?* Think outside of the box! Something that Asperger's people can, quite often, do very well.)

Not asking for reply btw, just 'throwing something out there'.

*I do, of course, know my own answer to this question.

EDIT: It is, of course, unrealistic to expect the entire world would ever be autistic. I can see that this is therefore not a situation that would arise, and I'm not placing any parallel in that respect to the Scotland debate. Even though, in another way (important emphasis), the 'think out of the box' thing could be applied to there!

in a word NO! I'm not autistic so my emotions are in the way? I think it's just fab that we have all had a grown up conversation about this tonight, with no arguments and we are all respectful of other people's views. :)
That in itself says a lot about us all
  • Well lovely people it's been a pleasure this evening, thanks for all the different opinions and more importantly, the laughs :)

Time for me to get to bed, OH wants to go vote in the morning before he goes to work and DD goes to nursery, so I'll need to be organised. Least I can crash back out after that :rotfl:

    [...]

Sorry, fell at the very first point for me.

I don't think there is freedom of speech (even at "Speaker's Corner"). It's always edged in by restrictions. It's always a qualified right and can be restricted to respect the rights of others for example. (I'm not arguing that it should not be 'restricted' in that way.) Do you mean to suggest that, for example, the general public order law does not apply, or cannot be applied, in respect of Speaker's Corner? I disagree, as matter of fact and law.

They say that. But it's never applied to its logical and absolute conclusion. There's always some limitation or restriction, even if it is a justified one.

Yeah I agree the Nakd bars are pretty good ingredients wise. I only really like the choc/orange ones though.

Glad you like the almond milk. Did you try the sweetened or unsweetened?

I went straight in with unsweetened. I certainly won't be cutting sugar out of my diet (PD knows without my Red Bull I'd probably shrivel up) but I really enjoyed it :)
