What's the cheapest broadband?

I am now a student and need to make cuts to my JSA untill I either get a college placement or get weekend work.

Virginmedia tell me I cannot get a cheaper broadband than what I already have. I pay £27 per month for it, and the cost will increase soon! It is just unlimited fibre optic broadband, no line rental.

If I go with an another provider, such as SKY or BT, I would have to pay a phone line rental, which I don't need because I never use a phone, and the cost to use the service will be the same give or take a few pence.

So is there a cheaper broadband out there than what I am already using?

I know on TopCashBack, BT are doing a Cash Back deal on Student Broadband package, not sure how much it is though.

What about a mobile broadband option?

Talk Talk are terrible service. I couldn't get online for weeks and then I was online with them for three days and then it went down for a week. I cancelled and wrote a letter to them expressing my discontent.

I'm talking with Plusnet at the moment but not having much joy as they want £30 per month on fibre optic.

I cannot stand mobile broadband. I do a lot of work on the PC.

    Do you need fibre?

Unfortunately, the cheap deals are with Talktalk. I've not had major problems with them (not like BT).

They vary the deals, but Unlimited BB only is about £3.50, and Unlimited Fibre is £13.50 - I am on the latter.

You may be able to pay for a year's line rental in advance, for a discount. Otherwise £15.45, I think.

Tesco do one for £17.40 per month which includes the price of line rental, but after 12 months the price is hiked to £30 per month! And which point I would have to go back to the cheaper Virgin broadband.

I just don't trust Talktalk. I was visited by two of their lackies, they must have just left school or something. Very unprofessional. They look like the worst kind of snake oil salesmen I have ever seen.

Those TT prices are their full prices.

You pays your money and takes your choice.

I've not had any major problems with them, and I've been with them for nearly 2 years at two different addresses.

I just finished talking with a Talktalk agent and she explained that I would be £7 per month better off by going with her company than with Virgin. That's a mere £1.75 per week! I lose that amount down the sofa!!

Might as well stay with Virgin.

Since your original £27 is only £6.75 per week, you were never going to get gold cufflinks with the deal.

Check the Quidco cashback deals on EE.

The £130 cashback deal keeps appearing and disappearing.
I saw it yesterday, but it's showing £80 right now.

£2.50 a month for broadband, £132 in advance for line line rental.
Quidco takes a small cut in annual fee.

Other than appalling service, and it probably won't work one week out of four, it's a very cheap deal. I'm thinking of getting it as my backup broadband.
