What car to go for?

We are down to one car since OH sold his car last week.

He's torn between Mitsubishi asx & Freelander. His heart says Freelander but is asx more practical.

He has no need for 4 wheel drive! Most of motoring is around town with occasional (say monthly) motorway trips. We want more room for transporting DD to her Uni accom. - we had to hire a van to bring her home due to lack of space in previous car.

He just fancies a bigger type car. On a practical level he feels he should go for Passat estate but it's not the car her really wants.

Freelander is diesel and asx petrol. He's a bit concerned about paying for a diesel for mainly local driving.

He has a budget of about £10k

We looked at the ASX when looking for a new car 4 years ago. On paper it looked perfect. When we went to look at it we couldn't get our pram in the boot. The boot is seriously tiny. And it's hideous to drive. We ended up with an outlander and still as pleased with it today as we were then. Can get masses in the back of that.

Not driven a freelander, but I'd choose almost anything else over the ASX.

We liked it to drive even though we weren't expecting it. The boot would be okay for us, bit old for prams and with split rear seats it's enough storage. We don't want a huge car as it's not really needed apart from Uni trips which tbh rather than buy a tank we can hire a car for the day.

We just want a decent size car that OH will enjoy and not guzzle petrol or rack up huge repair bills. We will keep car for a good few years as we are not fussed on changing regularly.

I have a Fiesta which is fine for my 2 mile commute and decent on insurance for DD to drive too. I drive OH car when DD has mine - OH has motorbike which he uses for pleasure so he can get his thrills from that!

Buy a Vectra 1.8 petrol and keep the remaining £8.5k handy for future hires and holidays.

    , do

Don't like the vectra in fact don't like Vauxhall.

OH knows zilch about cars so we value reliability and no niggles. Saw a Honda Accord and Volvo V70 today, both lovely but he's not sure. V70 will stretch our budget

Why on earth would you want a Freelander? Google 'the three amigos freelander' it should put you off

ETA If you do get a Freelander you'll need one of these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NO-HAIRDRESSING-PRODUCTS-LEFT-IN-VEHICLE-OVERNIGHT-humorous-vinyl-car-sticker-/400296034014?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item5d3380bede :)

    hahaha!

A mechanic friend was here today and he said "Freelanders loads of problems despite BMW engine"! I test drove one and thought it plastic inside which OH agreed on.

I'm bored at looking at cars but life will be hell if he buys a car he hates it!

He still reminisces about his Mondeo that he reluctantly got rid of 3 years ago. He loved car but it was almost 10 year old and showing age though it had been mega reliable aside from brake callipers. He saw a white mondeo today he loved but said it was probably ex taxi

Don't buy an accord. They're universally fitted with a device that ensures the driver is in the wrong lane on all roundabouts and only ever in the middle lane on motorways (averaging 56 mph) even if there's nothing in the left lane for 8 miles. And seemingly the indicators aren't connected to anything either.

The White Van of cars then!

Anything big like the freelander and you have to look at the price of parts for them, especially tyres.

My BIL had a Mitsubishi Shogun and had a couple of punctures, the tyres cost a fortune, compared to smaller more popular cars. It was forever in the shop getting fixed and my sister kept 'Borrowing' money off my mum, which she is still waiting for to be returned.

A good secondhand Mondeo estate would be fine, good runners and easier to get parts. Also have a look at a Passat Highline estate, lovely car with huge boot.

A mondeo would be a safe, sensible option. Lovely to drive but dull!

He's seen a Passat estates he likes but he can't quite give up wanting a 4x4 /crossover type car.

He is aware of cost of parts, tyres, car tax, insurance etc. but I think he feels all his life (apart from his 1st car - mini copper s) had the practical/sensible option. He does get his buzz from his motorbike but I think he wants a car with it too now!

He's trying to get me to consider Jag estates (he says essentially a mondeo with Jag styling). I think they look like an old man's car hence their cheapness!
