    How old is the Mercedes?.
Repair costs. £50 for conveniently cheaper mate. £20 paint and filler. £180 profit.

You don't really have a grasp of cost or accounting.

Don't be silly Adrian of course you don't tell your insurers what is the point in not going via your insurance.
...and when they ask if you've been involved in any incidents, whether claimed for or not, and you say "No", that is a... <_____> * Insert word here. Three letters, begins with L.

I think he is ripping me off but not sure if it would be cheaper to pay my insurance company, plus it will be on my car accident history if I tell them.
You may be happy to breach your policy conditions over this but unless the merc owner is also intending to breach his policy and risk having his insurance voided for non disclosure then you will have this registered on the shared database.

Meaning any insurer checking up on you will discover and the breach could allow them to void your policy.

I think he is unlikely to turn around after you've paid and claim from his insurance since he will then have a claim on his history. I can't see it being worth his bother for £250.

He may well be bumping up the price a bit but but you have inconvenienced him significantly. It could have been worse aqnd you're happy with it so it's not even worth arguing.

He has a shop and you know where that is so I would have thought that makes it less likely for him to pull a fast one.

I might be a bit naive but I would have paid him, job done, end of story, no incident to report.

If you give it to your insurer it will probably cost more, especiaally if they insist on using approved and/or vat registered garage.

Your costings are wrong and it would appear that you think your listed costs are all that are relevant to a body repair shop, which is obviously not the case.

It would appear you think the conveniantly cheaper friend who apparently expects to be paid in cash is a body shop.

Repair costs = Mercedes owner is told " i will pay for damages, as i don't want my ncb affected." so thinks, "My old Merc is worth little and I don't really care about a scuffed bumper so how much can I ask for without it being cheaper for him to use his insurance?. I'll try £250".

    So what?

The OP hit another car and doesn't want to involve his insurance company... the 'cost' of that decision is that he will have to rely on the goodwill and cooperation of the third party.

He should consider himself lucky that the third party is happy to go along with his wishes... If he'd hit my car I'd insist on using insurance and on repairs at an approved shop.
