Money Moral Dilemma: Should Hermione contribute to Harry's dog Ron?

Here's this week's hypothetical situation for you to cogitate on:
After a year of dating, Hermione and Harry moved in together and almost immediately bought a wee puppy, Ron. Unfortunately six months later they split up and although they both want him, it's decided Ron would be better off with Harry. Struggling to deal with household bills alone, Harry notices how much of an expense Ron is and asks Hermione to pay towards the day to day costs of him, as they both made a commitment to Ron.
Should Hermione contribute to Harry's little dog Ron?

Yes she should. Having an animal is as much of a commitment as having a child.0

Absolutely, especially if she has 'access' to him as it were. She could pay for food or vets bills - they should come to an agreement over what is fair. Not buying unnecessary toiletries 2024 26/53 UU, 25 IN0

I think she should pay for dog insurance and Harry should pay for everything else.

i help out with the looking after of my ex's bearded dragon he bought when we lived together...Although officially shes "his" i helped look after her for 6 months and care about her so i'll buy her crickets if he cant get the shop cos of work and in true MSE style i grow cabbage in my garden to feed her as its cheaper than him/us buying it!
Even though he paid for her and she still lives with him i feel like shes partly mine as i looked after her for 6 months and got the pleasure from her... and i do get the occassional "hello mummy..." picture texts with anything funny she does or if shes had a growth spurt since i last saw her. We also have an agreement that i'll take care of her if he goes on holiday etc.. its all quite sad really isnt it??hehe

Yes. It was a joint venture. She should pay half of everything.0

No if they decided between them who was going to keep the dog then he should pay.
But if he can't afford to look after it then he should offer his ex the chance to take the dog coz if they can afford it then it will be better for the dog in the long run.
A dog is NOT a child who could be seriously affected by not seeing a parent - as long as a dog has a caring responsible owner who gives it food, water, shelter and walks then it's happy...
I saw a program where people were fighting custody battles over dogs (which IMHO is a bit silly) but if they share the care then they should share the cost but if only 1 person gets the benefit of the dog then why should the other 1 pay ???You should never call somebody else a nerd or geek because everybody (even YOU !!!) is an"anorak" about something whether it's trains, computers, football, shoes or celebs:rotfl:

I'm with MicsChick on this one.
It's nothing akin to child rearing, where both the parents and the children understand the concept of living apart, but still being part of someone's life.
In an animal's mind, th eperson they share their life with is numero uno (mostly).
If Harry can't afford Ron, he should offer him to Hermione, not expect her to forkout for his pleasure.
This does bring me to another pertinent question. Who was paying for Ron's upkeep when they were a couple? Clearly Harry had no idea how much having a dog would cost, so I assume it was Hermione who bore the brunt. So how come Harry got the #dog?
Sounds to me llike Harry was used to having his cake and eating it, and Hermione had been bullied into letting him have his own way, so when they split, she naturally gave in about the dog.
No wonder Harry wants her to stump up, he probably thinks he can still push her around.
In my opinion, this is less about the dog, and more about Harry and Hermione's relationship. I think Harry should get some help with his bullying attitude, and hermione, should get the dog and get a life away from oppressive relationships and men. LOLI ave a dodgy H, so sometimes I will sound dead common, on occasion dead stupid and rarely, pig ignorant. Sometimes I may be these things, but I will always blame it on my dodgy H.
Sorry, I'm a bit of a grumble weed today, no offence intended ... well it might be, but I'll be sorry.0 -
No, not in the long term, she shouldn't help finance the dog's upkeep although perhaps she could give her ex a small lump sum as a one-off final contribution. If Harry can't afford to keep a pet, he should have it rehomed as it's unfair to keep an animal if you can't afford the vet's bills to have it properly treated if it falls ill. The issue will be if/when Hermione gets herself involved in a new relationship. Her new partner might well resent the money she is spending on a dog associated with a former relationship.0

I think the cheapest way would be to both pay half the price of having the dog put to sleep and get a life.0

Ouch!!
He gets the pleasure of having the dog, then the downside is to pay for it's upkeep. Perhaps he's learn a lesson about responsibility if he was made to pay the lotI'm Glad to be here... At my age I'm glad to be anywhere!!
I'm not losing my hair... I'm getting more head!!0
