Royal Mail redirection without permission

  • The big issue that I see - is that their solicitor will post them documents to sign / check and they'll get redirected to you and sit in a draw - it could make getting to exchange much more difficult.

I would be telling the agents to tell the vendors to get it sorted ASAP, remind the agent that they don't get paid without a sale and with the vendors no longer receiving post, they will not be able to complete the paperwork required to exchange.

Why can you not contact the buyer direct?

If the mail is being redirected, it will have the old address on the envelopes.

Set up another redirect back to their current address, their mail will then be caught in an endless loop.

Just don't write to them at their old address ;)

Yes, we can see the address, but they are ex-directory and we don't have an e-mail address. Obviously can't write to them, as others point out, it will come back to us.....

We could go via the solicitor I guess, but guess it's a bit formal for something that is just an inconvenience rather than anything worse. Just thought it was a bit odd and a real cheek.

Write to them at their new address - i.e. your address (without posting it so as to save on stamps :p)

Cheek aspect aside, as others have said at this stage in the process their solicitor will still be sending them important documents which they need to see before completion.

The EA works for you - you're paying them. Ring them and tell them to speak to your buyer. Explain the point about solicitor documents, and that you're worried the buyers will miss out on important document - pitch it as you're trying to help the buyers, not that you're peed off with them. I don't see why the EA wouldn't pass that on.

Are they local enough you could hand deliver a letter to them asking if this is what they wanted as surely any letters from the solicitor/BS won't get to them.

30 miles or so - more than I am prepared to drive

Thanks for all the advice. I've just e-mailed our solicitor on the basis suggested ie. that they will miss out on getting important documents. That ought to resolve it without us seeming petty. Thanks again.

Did that earlier this week, but the agents won't pass it on in case it upsets the buyers!

I think the EA is taking a pragmatic, sensible view.

Redirecting the mail seems like a weird thing to do (maybe the buyers are weird people)...
But it does no harm to anybody...
    It makes the sellers happy...
    So why rock the boat?

And perhaps there is a sensible explanation. For example:

    - They have moved into temporary accommodation for a few weeks
    - The solicitor and mortgage co (and other important people) have the temp address.
    - The redirect is just to catch the less important stuff
    - A Royal Mail redirect lasts for 3, 6 or 12 months - they don't expect to be in the temp address for 3 months.
    - So the simpler solution is to set up a 12 month redirect to your address
