my OH used to be a removal man.. he now works in a feild where he is paid better - but will never get a tip..

He insists on tipping, I felt the removers worked their !!!!!! off - so - deserved a tip (£10 each I think.. )

The removers were good natured, and worked hard - I might have felt less generous if they had of been grumpy and rude!

Did you guys pay a lot of money for your removals, then? The quotes I have been given are £1800+. I didn't take into account tipping as well. I'm a bit stuck as moving 200 miles away, on my own with 4 children.

MM, ours is costing us £1740+vat.

Tbh, I thought it was very expensive.
    Life is now good :)
  • Voice of cynicism here = do be aware they might have stolen their own tip. My last ones did so in the course of their firm being paid extra to do the packing for me.

I managed to get compensation from the firm for my stolen goods and I just have to hope their tip cost them dear (ie their jobs).

Because you've already paid them for a job well done? Generally speaking, tipping is on the decline. It was discussed in great detail a few weeks ago here. Since then the BBC had an article about tipping being on the way out in France. And, of course, in some locations tipping is discouraged and considered insulting.

Oddly enough, I think tipping is illogical, an outdated tradition, an absolutely stupid thing to do and completely unfair on everybody as some sectors have employees who are paid lower wages as the employer assumes they will also get tips, while the other sectors have employees who do an equally good job but will never get a tip in their life.

But I still do it sometimes. :D

I would prefer to hire a van and move everything myself rather than spend money on removal people, personally, so I don't know if I'd ever be in a situation to tip a removal person myself. If they did it faster than we'd agreed in the contract and with everything unbroken, though, I imagine I would.

I tip everyone who is kind enough to provide me with good service, tradespeople, removals, taxi drivers, hairdressers, waiters - everyone.

If they are say a professional for example my physiotherapist I don't tip, I buy a small Christmas gift instead.

I have only once not tipped someone, it was a taxi driver who didn't lift my suitcase into the car or open my door for me.

I'm in an odd situation. I'm moving house because the Housing Association is going to refurbish my accommodation. The HA are paying for the removals and so on. Six months or so in the new place and we'll be moving back again. Do we tip in those circumstances?

If they give you good service and if you can afford it then yes. The likelihood is that in these circumstances the removal men will be working for a fairly large company and not as a self employed small business.

In a situation where people doing the actual work are the business owners, ie one man bands or small family businesses then tipping is perhaps not so important. If the people doing the work are employees then I do like to tip, assuming of course I'm happy with the service.

Don't be embarrassed about tipping, no one will think you are playing Lord or Lady of the Manor, no one is likely to be offended.

It is not degrading for the person on the receiving end of the tip, it is not patronising. It is just a courtesy and a way of saying thank you for receiving very good service.

If I give the removal people good service (e.g. make them a coffee and help them move some of the boxes) is there any chance that I could expect a tip?
Q: What kind of discussions aren't allowed?
A: It goes without saying that this site's about MoneySaving.

Q: Why are some Board Guides sometimes unpleasant?
A: We very much hope this isn't the case. But if it is, please make sure you report this, as you would any other forum user's posts, to forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com.
