Urine on mattress!!!

Good morning!
So a friend of mine had a little 'accident' on my bed, which I didn't discover for 2 days!
She initially said it was water, and then claimed it was juice, however, in one certain spot I can smell a strong stench of urine!
I believe she attempted to clean it with water which is why it spread. I then lifted the mattress to find that it soaked straight through the mattress protector, the mattress through both sides AND the actual bed!!!!! Understandably I am absolutely furious she didn't tell me as it's easier to fix the problem when it's 'fresh' but unfortunately it's been left to linger!
So far I have tried a dish soap and baking soda solution, febreze, a sprinkling of baking soda, and an upholstery cleaner. The smell is still there and I have slept on the couch for far too long now!
I am now thinking of either hiring a rug doctor, buying my own steam cleaner, or as a last resort having a professional clean it (but it's very expensive!)
I have also purchased a Pet Disinfectant over a carpet cleaner, as it claims to be anti fungal, anti viral and anti bacterial
Unfortunately I don't have a garden so this would all have to be done inside, and buying a new mattress would literally have to be the final resort as it's a VERY expensive bed and mattress!
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Anything you do will just be treating the surface. You'll find it difficult to get anything removed from inside the mattress....so I'd just give up and replace the mattress. The base may be able to be saved by airing it and treating it's surface.
Accidents at an older age are embarrassing so it's probably why she didn't reveal it immediately so I wouldn't push it too much just forgive and forget and move on.
How expensive are we talking? You could get a reasonable quality new mattress for a couple hundred pounds delivered.:footie:Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

Does it make any difference? The mattress still stinks of pi$$.

Never had to do this but my suggestion would be to rinse it through thoroughly firstly with a mild detergent solution (something like an anti bac washing up liquid) and then with clean water. (The springs are generally anti rust treated so if you do it and dry it reasonably quickly it should be OK and if not then its no more a write off than it is now anyway!).
With a garden that would be relatively easy - prop it up on bricks or chairs and run a hose through the relevant part trying to keep the water running through just the affected part as much as possible. It will spread a bit but probably only to the extent the urine did in the first place. No need to soak the whole mattress.
Without a garden and assuming its not a single bed you can lie over the bath, you'll have to improvise a bit. Build some towers of books, juice cartons etc to enable you to lie it flat raised off the floor. Stick a shower curtain or tarpaulin to catch anything that really spreads, and then get a cheap kids paddling pool - biggest you can afford within reason (you can get blow up ones for a couple of quid usually) to put under the affected area to catch the water as you run it though. Once you've soaped it and rinsed it, and its stopped dripping, remove the pool and blow warm air underneath from a fan heater. With a bit of luck that might be enough to get rid of the smell. Simply cleaning the surface won't get rid of what is inside. Unfortunately there is a risk that you'll set off rust in the springs, but I reckon no more so that from the urine already in it.Adventure before Dementia!0 -
Late twenties and yes it was an alcohol fuelled accident
I like to think I'm really laid back, but the fact that I didn't know has annoyed me! Very frustrating indeed!
It's a Harrison tailor made mattress, I have just checked online and they're going for £600 now, however I'm pretty sure we paid more when we bought it!0 -
Tell her she needs to contribute to the cleaning.0

So........ get her to buy a new mattress and she can have yours which she decided to relieve herself on..... let her deal with it then...... As she's in her late 20's and it was an alcohol fuelled "accident" she should be wo"man" enough to deal with the consequences of her actions...... if not, get a new friend...0 -
I can't believe her first thought wasn't to 'fess up and offer to replace the matress like a proper friend! Or at least pay for the cleaning costs.0

This. In every way. Just say 'considering my mattress stink of p155, please can you buy me an equivalent one'?
Not an unreasonable request!!!!!!!!0
