  • I was in a similar pickle with stress and work, and I took the leap to go self employed.
A year on I'm now mostly debt-free, have a 4 bedroom house (had a flat before!) and a better car. If you have a solid idea, go for it.
  • Leave whilst you have the chance!, if its really that bad that you hate it they will know how you feel and wont want you there at best.
Place like that like everyone to lie about how great they are when they are failing/rubbish. Best thing is to get out now whilst you still have your health.
I hated my job and I ended up with severe depression and after I left it took me ages to recover and feel better. Basically what I think is that you are a long time dead and have to put yourself and your health first. Good luck.
  • A couple of common sense things - although I do agree that charity trustees can be the worst people in the world to work for!

    1. No, I think you have lost your LAST year's holiday allowance by not taking it. You should be paid for any untaken leave this year, though.

    2. Do you really need an office to start a business from? Wouldn't it be more sensible to work from home in the early days and save the rent on a lease?

Apart from that - go for it! :)
Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).
  • Thanks for your replies.

The premises I need are to run childrens parties, not for an office. Ive asked for advice about it on the small biz board but no ones answered. I could do the business without premises but it would be less saleable I think.
  • OK, so you need a DBS check before you resign. They are generally quicker nowadays but you might be unlucky..... (Or perhaps you have one already? Have you thought this far ahead?)

  • Well I can tell you what's happened recently.

The charity I work for was nominated for a large pot of local funding. The mood there was really high and jovial for a week even though we don't know if we've got it yet.

However, I found out last week that the chairperson has phoned up 2 of the volunteers and told them she thinks I'm incompetent, going senile, losing my memory, being deliberately negative and deliberately trying to sabotage the funding we have been nominated for.

Then she had a barbecue in her garden and invited everyone but me and was apparently screaming at the top of her voice all the above stuff to everyone there.

And I bet you're still doing more than 16 hours a week....

No I've been putting my foot down there and only doing 16 hours a week.
