any 1.6cc apart from granddaddy car types will send a 17yr old premium sky high, corolla for me is one the most expensive vehicles to insure im 30 with 4 years NCB premiums sit at about £1200 per year. I can see allot of decline to insure quotes for those pair of vehicles for a 17yr old.

He got one today, a 1.4, cost him £1850 with Tesco insurance.
    A 1.6 was about 2 grand,
I think you ought to shop around.

    Explained here.

That explains about motorbikes: I thought we were discussing cars.

Could anyone confirm or otherwise whether a newly qualified driver aged 21 can legally drive a 1600cc vehicle. Thank you in advance for your replies.

Yes.. why.. who were you going to try and cause trouble for?

I'm struggling to think of anything a 21 yr old is prohibited from doing.

Riding a motorcycle over 47 bhp without the necessary A category licence might be one.

Driving a car without the necessary licence is another, but the correct licence is in place and not relevent to being 21.

The license route is different for under 21s, though, so the "thing" that they can't do is to take the same route to a license as older people can.

    Eh? Can you please explain?

The bit you asked to be explained was relating to bike licenses.

I think you are missing the point.
What is a 21 year old prohibited from doing (lets assume correct qualifications are in place)?

Engine size is just one parameter for insurance companies. I'm looking to replace my Focus for a smaller cheaper to run car, so that I can save up a house deposit. How it's going to cost me more to insure a 68hp C1 than it does to insure a 221hp Focus, I'll never understand, well I do, it's down to a lot of claims on C1's due to new drivers, but that's unfortunately the way insurance works for some reason.

It is probably down to other factors, for example a crash in the Focus is probably less likely to kill or seriously injure the occupants than the C1, or security is the Focus harder to pinch?

No age related but insurance related... At one point I had a MGV VVC - 0-6 sub 7 secs and top end of around 130mph, and I also had a 1.6 zafira - the insurance on the zafira was £200 a year more than the MGF! All I could think of is the zafira is a 7 seater and therefore more risk of claims in a bump.

I've always found Tesco to be one of the more expensive for younger drivers, they certainly are for me!
I've found the likes of Admiral and Elephant to be the cheapest for me in the last few years.
I started off with a 1.2 when I passed, which was about £90pm to insure, than a 1.4 which was £113, then went 'down' to £98, now driving a 1.6 which is £60pm for me to insure. I only have 1 years NCD too.
