21 yr old driving 1600cc car. Is it legal?

Could anyone confirm or otherwise whether a newly qualified driver aged 21 can legally drive a 1600cc vehicle. Thank you in advance for your replies.

    short answer YES

If he/she can afford to insure it, yes. There is no restriction on engine size or power output for new car drivers as there is with motorcycles. Perhaps there should be, but that's the law as it stands.

Yes - even a 3.5litre 4x4 if they can afford the insurance!

I would have thought this would have been covered in preparation for the test?

Absolutely legal so long as you're insured to drive it. Hell, you can drive a Porsche if you've got the money.

I drove a P5 Rover 3.5l V8 coupe the same age as I was when I was 17. My insurance seemed steep but would have been just as high on a smaller more modern car.

there was someone on here who found it cheaper for their daughter to insure an old V70 than a hatchback when she had just passed.

Sorry but why wouldnt it be allowed? you take a driving test to drive a car. A 1600 isnt even a big engine!

In some places in the world restrictions are placed on younger/ newly qualified drivers. Just not mainland UK, I think N Ireland is slightly different but again not as far as restricting vehicles.

A while ago there was even a photo of a Lamborghini with L plates with a youngster driver.
  • I got my Focus at 22, 2522cc engine haha, as already answered, is it legal, yes. The only form of capacity restriction with vehicles is motorbikes.

Is OP asking because they know a new driver that wants a 1600cc car OR is OP asking as a nosey neighbour who has beef with the lad over the road?
