What benefit from fibre?

More than 640KB? Who in the world would ever need more than 640KB?

High speed is handy for very fast downloads. Of probably more benefit if you use cloud services at all is the close to 20Mbps upload compared to 1Mbps on ADSL which will just about kill the downstream too if used flat out.

Everything obviously works on ADSL but fibre can make it smoother if the connection gets used in earnest. The price differential is pretty high but will probably fall the same as everything else in this area has.

The benefit of fibre, IMO, is concurrency, particularly if you use IPTV. In my house, we might be recording two HD IPTV channels while someone else is watching Netflix while I'm working from home using all the normal business apps and it just doesnt matter. Upload speed is also great.

Thought I would add my comments as we got "fibre" last Friday.

I personally think it is only worth getting if you live in area (e.g. village or rural community) where the speed on ADSL is absymal.

We were regularly getting speeds of 0.5 MB and couldn't watch Youtube videos, let alone try and load Iplayer or watch Sky on demand, Netflix, etc. Having gone for the basic option Fibre service, the speed difference is staggering. No more buffering and webpages that load in seconds rather than minutes. For us it's now a necessity but I wouldn't bother if you can get decent speed on ADSL!

I'm finding higher speeds are necessary since I installed the 'teenage children' app. :-/
  • I am on 120mb with Virgin and generally average around about 100-110.

    It's amazing!

Connection drops every now and then but I can deal with that.

...had a big family gathering last month and at various times over the weekend there were up to 8 devices connected to my wireless router and my 16Mb connection -even then, I saw no evidence of slow downs - I admit they probably weren't all watching HD films at the same time:rotfl:

A lot depends upon what you use .
I get a much more stable connection on fibre and consistent speeds but don't really need above 20meg download speed .

There is no reason why a decent adsl connection should be any less stable or consistent thank fibre though.

This is why I have fibre. I'm not a gamer etc but the speed here on ADSL is incredibly slow despite being on the edge of a biggish town.

The speed is most often determined by distance from the exchange-and they're rarely right in town centres.
