Does anyone here seriously think it's reasonable to travel for 4+ hours on the morning that you're planning to move just to pick up a set of keysThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

Yes I did from London to Cheshire for exactly the same reason as the OP. I could not guarantee that I could get there with my belongings at a time when the keys could be collected from the LA
You didn't think to ask the LA to post them to you, saving you expense and hassle on what would already be a stressful day? I assume that was the first day you were paying rent on your newly rented property, meaning that you aren't in the same boat as the OP.0 -

^^Agree. Posting is impractical (for the LL) for many reasons.
The LL holds all the cards - why should he risk any problems by sending them?
Unless the key-mail was arranged prior to signing the contract and the LL is now changing his mind, tenant will have to pay the £8 or whatever and get the train up there...0 -
Generally when picking up the keys to a new place I've had to sign to say I've received them and to confirm how many copies have been provided. How would the landlord be able to do this via post?
I suppose the LA, or the LL could send a document over the interwebs for the tenant to sign and e-mail back to say that the keys have been posted and they now assume all responsibility for them etc etc. Not too tricky tbh0 -

But why should they bother? added paperwork, time , effort, risk etc.
All the OP needs to do is get himself organised.0 -
I meet all my tenants in person on the first day to go through the check in process with them, make sure they know how to use the boiler/find the instructions and give them another copy of my details (often get misplaced when moving). However, I also need signed confirmation concerning the number of keys received and the state of the property, not something I can so if I'm not there.
I would not post a key to a new tenant, I would to a tenant I had previously met, but they could just get another key cut them self.
Really it isn't at all unreasonable to go and pick up your keys yourself, is there a reason you cannot use public transport, London to Birmingham is both quick and cheap.0 -

It's not really the landlord's issue that the OP can't get a lift at a reasonable time. The LL appears to be being flexible as regards time.
Hiring a car is a good idea - you can get really cheap ones these days and if you rent it in London, you can return in Birmingham.
I travel from Birmingham to London on the train all the time - the journey time runs at about an hour and most times I do the journey it is the same day return. Plus, being sat on a train allows you to do other things as well, so it is not wasted time.[STRIKE]DFW Nerd number 729[/STRIKE]Debt Free & Proud0 -
Long time lurker, had to post to reply to some of the dross on here.
Shocked at the replies to the OP here, I think what he's asking is perfectly reasonable. It's not like the keys can be linked to the flat in Birmingham should they be lost en-route anyway, and I'm certain they wouldn't be the only copy of the key in existence. Also you CAN get guaranteed post for Saturday, so I'm not sure why people were saying that. Finally the very very very small chance that a Special Delivery item does go missing, you can claim compensation up to £1,000, so no one will be out of pocket.
Does anyone here seriously think it's reasonable to travel for 4+ hours on the morning that you're planning to move just to pick up a set of keys?? I wouldn't dream of it - also the guy is already paying rent on the place so it's not like he's asking for them early or anything.
Some of the posts on here are so stupid I kind of think the person must have been joking when they wrote them. How is this person being a difficult tenant?? They live in London, the flat is in Birmingham, posting the keys is an easier job than arranging to meet someone and the costs of doing it are being covered by the tenant. G_M in particular, I read your posts a lot and they generally make sense but you're off the mark here.
And the lift, whoever is giving it must know when they are coming. Impossible not to. Impossible.0 -

You'll be extremely unpopular with your new neighbours if you move in the early hours :eek:Try to be a rainbow in someone's cloud.0
