To be honest, I wouldn't post a tenant the keys. It's a massively valuable asset to which your asking somebody to send out the access to. I'm with the landlord on this one0

He's already got my deposit and a full months rent and a signed contract for 1 year.
If I could get up there on under my own steam - I would - but I've got too much stuff to take on the train and need the lift in a car. I know it will be either Sat or Sun - but won't know what time till an hour or two before we set off. AsI say - might not arrive till 2am in the morning.
Shall I tell landlord to allow a big window for arrival - ie anytime in 48 hrs!
You could get up at 7am on Saturday morning, get the train to Birmingham, meet the Landlord at 11am easily.
Then you get the train back to London, arrive there before 3pm, wait for your lift to finish work and be driven back up with your stuff.
Is that difficult.......course it isn't!We’ve had to remove your signature. Please check the Forum Rules if you’re unsure why it’s been removed and, if still unsure, email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
If you're in London and the flat's in Birmingham I'm guessing you haven't met him yet so to be fair he probably wants to look at the person he's renting his flat out to as well, I think I would lol0

As others have said ... get the train up to Birmingham Saturday morning and then return by train to load the car and get a lift with your stuff.
I wouldn't post the keys to anyone if I was a landlord ... even recorded post gets lost and isn't guaranteed by Saturday. The only way to have a reasonable chance of it arriving is to send the keys special delivery.
Also the landlord is being flexible about key collection times - if this was a letting through an agent if would have to be Saturday or a week day during office hours - he's being more helpful than some would be in this situation!0 -
Maybe, he wants to explain to you in person how stuff works, boiler washing machine, etc
Or welcome you to the area and be available to answer any questions you might have
Or explain who to contact when things break etc
You are entering into a relationship with him or is it unreasonable to meet?0 -

You cant be that vague as you know your lift wont be arriving any time in a 48 hr window. To think it will is kidding your self. Its not hard, why make it so?0 -
I think what OP is asking based on requiring a lift with a carload of stuff makes his request reasonable.
Why are so many people hating on him? Suggesting he gets a train from Birmingham to London just to pick up some keys are you joking? I bet that costs at least 100 quid and an entire day of your time, not everyone can afford to burn 100 quid for the sake of a stamp.
I would explain to the landlord that you might be arriving in the middle of the night. Ask him if there is some kind of compromise you can make. Perhaps he could leave the keys under a rock in the garden the night before in the unlikely chance you arrive at 2am. Or ask if he'd be happy about that.0 -
Off-peak return London - Birmingham = £28 Nowhere near the £100 suggested in the post above!0

The landlord has no obligation to send the keys to you early.
He does not need to be reasonable. So whether he is being reasonable or not is irrelevant.Well life is harsh, hug me don't reject me.0 -

There we go as the above poster says for 30 quid its worth it.
I would never post a tenant the keys - too much to go wrong and not enough control of the situation - did they get them? Will they say no and just ransack/strip the house/why dont they want to meet me...
Yes you have a car load of stuff. So take a bag with you so that you can drop it off when you meet and get it sorted."If you no longer go for a gap, you are no longer a racing driver" - Ayrton Senna0
