    Building regulations aren't retrospective. If it complied when it was installed, it can stay there forever. It's entirely up to you whether or not you want an upgrade.

    The only way you (or an electrician working for you) to tell if the place has been re-wired is to take a few light switches and sockets off the wall and look at the cables behind. It's easy to swap all the electrical accessories for new ones to make an installation look new, without doing anything to the underlying wiring.
    If it sticks, force it.
    If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.
